Lately I’ve been bouncing between Frontier and Modern, and while I don’t grind as hard as I did in my previous weeks, I still use up some of my weekend time for a few chill battles. Frontier is my main playground, Modern is my “earn while I learn” lane. I enjoy both battle formats because of the different rewards I gain when winning.
Why These Two Modes Keep Me Hooked
- Frontier = Foundation card farming. I love that a win can gain me Foundation cards. I’ll sell some for DEC, but I keep the ones that fit within my gameplan to strengthen my core lineups.
- Modern = GLINTH generator. My Modern matches feed me GLINTH, which I use into Soulbound purchases. Every pull is a little dopamine hit, and when a Legendary pops, it gets me even more excited about playing.
Overall, these 2 battle formats are what makes Splinterlands feel worth my time: progress creates more progress. I don’t need to be a “whale” to see tangible growth week over week.
Today’s Match: Testing Earth in Modern 🌿
I’ve leaned on Death splinters a lot because they’ve carried me to plenty of wins, but that can turn into bias. So today I utilized Earth in Modern to see if it could also win me some battles, and the answer was a resounding yes.
Summoner: Kaylia Silverleaf (my MVP for a reason). Her Execute ability end fights the moment an enemy dips low health points.
Frontline: Endless Ape, big HP and sustain; he buys time when it matters.
Slot 2: Time Bandit, Magic Debuff from second position adds real, reliable pressure while my tank soaks.
Mid/Backline: Balckmoor Wild Elf for damage, then ranged or magic finishers (think Silverleaf Ranger or Warlock style roles) to capitalize when Execute triggers.
Result? Victory in Bronze III and a nice bump of rating and rewards. The turning point was classic Earth: strong tank at the front, efficient cleanup in back. Once Kaylia’s Execute chains started, the battle tilted fast and never tilted back.
The Lesson (Re-learned): Strategy Beats “Strongest Splinter”
I went into this game thinking, “Is Earth actually as strong as Death for me?” As the match unfolded, I realized the real question is never about the “strongest splinter.” It’s about:
- Ruleset reading (am I protecting what matters this round?)
- Positioning discipline (melee up front unless it’s Reach, Sneak, or Opportunity; babysit your glass cannons)
- Role clarity (tank, secondary melee, magic or ranged pressure, finishers)
When these three click, any splinter feels strong enough to win a battle. When they don’t, even a “favored” splinter losses a game.
The Web3 Bit: Hive Makes It Frictionless 💙
Something I’m really grateful for: Splinterlands running on Hive. Transactions are basically feeless on Resource Credits, so I can play, buy, sell, stake, and claim without the mental tax of “gas math.” If this lived on a chain like Ethereum, a casual weekend session would cost more than it’s worth. On Hive, I can experiment freely, which is exactly what a strategy game needs.
Where I’m Aiming Next
- Frontier for daily battles. Keep farming Foundation cards, keep what fits, list what doesn’t.
- Modern for GLINTH → Soulbound. Keep battling for those deck-worthy pulls.
- Targeted upgrades. Level the cards I actually field (Kaylia core + Earth monsters) instead of scattering resources.
- Positioning reps. Save my winning setups as templates and swap only what the ruleset demands.
I’m excited because growth here is visible: better lineups, cleaner wins, smarter losses. And that’s the loop, learn, tweak, queue again. If you’re looking for a weekend game that rewards thinking and lets you build something over time, Frontier and Modern on Hive is a sweet spot. See you in the arena. 🐉⚔️

Yeah chill battles are great. Sometimes grind will lead to losing streaks
Exactly... sometimes taking it easy helps you win more in the long run. 😄
