A 2D sci-fi noir adventure game with a comic aesthetic and a story about robots, discrimination, flying cars and an oppressive society with a class system that you can’t escape from.

Game Engine: Unity

£5.99 / Steam

Maker’s Eden is not a new game. The first episode was published in 2014 and since then Episode 2 was published in 2016 and we are still waiting for Episode 3. The game’s developer is Screwy Lightbulb which is small four-man South African studio. The game is developed as a side project, so that is why it has taken a while to be finished.

If you like point and click adventures, witty robot dialogues and you are excited about the new TV series Electric Dreams, that is inspired by Philip Dick’s short stories, then this game is probably for you. The game is played as an interactive fiction novel with small puzzles here and there. It is described as a hypertext adventure that is given as a motion comic. You are navigating through hand-drawn sci-fi environments and you encounter some unique characters throughout your journey.

The story revolves around an oppressive futuristic society where robots get a “delegation” according to a class system that has to do with how well built they are. Everyone that doesn’t fit into the system or wants to escape is hunted. The main character is an anonymous robot on the run that has no idea of who he/ she is. The dialogues, although they might be over the top sometimes, are well written and there are a lot of moments that hit the right chord and you will stop to think about a line or just laugh.

Maker’s Eden first episode is not big and it is easy to play through in a bit more than an hour since there are not any hard puzzles to solve. There are some moments where you might need to backtrack and talk to certain characters again to unlock certain areas but this is as far as it gets in terms of difficulty. It is not the gameplay though that will keep you hooked with the game. It is the sci-fi noir aesthetic, the weird story and the unique gloomy atmosphere. If you are willing to forgive the game’s various defects and its incomplete state you are in for an enjoyable ride.
