16-Bit FMV CD Games! - Game Sack

in #gaming8 years ago

This was one of my favorite episodes to make. All of our on-camera scenes are actually running on my model 1 Genesis and model 1 Sega CD. In the episode itself we take a look at a bunch of FMV games, even one on the TurboGrafx CD. FMV was the bane of existence for the Sega CD and turned many people away and rightfully so. Still, it has its place in history and it's fun to look back on. Let us never repeat the mistakes of the past!

FMV games were awesome back in the day. Now? Not so much.

I'd kinda argue that they weren't even that awesome back in the day.

I'd kinda argue they are way better now than back in the day, at least we can get enoment out of laughing at them.

It really depends on what you were expecting from Full Motion Video games. I went into them knowing they were going to be slower paced, sometimes monotonous, and repetitive. I personally loved titles like Dracula Unleashed and Prize Fighter. Each for different reasons.

Dracula Unleashed because the horror genre was ripe to explore with FMV. It was the one genre that was hard to pull off, at least during the 16-Bit days of gaming. FMV allowed that to happen and quite well, had it been explored correctly. Dracula Unleashed as the best example of what we got and that is still so far from what could have been if developers really tried.

Storage space was a problem with these games. Sure, publishers could increase costs and run with more than one CD in the box (many did) but that breaks the focus of the gamer.

Imagine a horror game with about half an hour or so of footage. The actual ending could be the longest part of the affair, after the initial setup. The rest could have been handled through short clips of the character(s) surviving/avoiding the evil character(s).

Prize Fighter is a great example of FMV done right. Short clips that make it feel like you are controlling a character in a fight. Great execution and a title that I wish we saw a sequel to on PSOne or Sega's Saturn console.

Daedalus Encounter (3DO and PC) is another good one but only because I like me some Tia Carrere.

Night Trap! So much controversy over nothing, really. Now, Phantasmagoria 2, that's a different thing entirely.

Never was a big fan of FMV games, I didn't enjoy the trend and the massive amount of disk space that these movies... ahem, games required.

Give me a Monkey Island over a Dragon's Lair or a Mad Dog McCree any day. :)
