This game from the EA Originals line and that is also a very original one. According to Zoink Games, however, it has had free rein in the choices in the development of this third-person adventure. The result is Fe.

The setting is a country filled with powerful colors and a beautiful style that is reminiscent of the world of a beautifully made animated movie. The game has a quiet pace that lets you relax, something that few other games succeed. If you are looking for action, speed and adrenaline then you have nothing to look for in Fe.

Zoink throws you almost immediately the adventure with just a few hints what you have to do. The screen only shows a few buttons that you have to press. Fe wanders in the beginning through the purple-black forest, where we follow a deer-like creature. Nothing tells you to do this, intuitively we know that Fe does must do. Shortly thereafter we make knowledge by singing. Indeed, by singing. Once again: if you are hoping for explosions or popping, or even traditional dialogues, we must unfortunately disappoint you. Right from the start, the game is reminiscent of Journey. Fe is also a feast for the eyes, explains little. Singing is the key element in the game, Fe new songs teach to help other animals and thereby learn new skills.

The adventure is accompanied by beautiful background music, here slightly more subtle than the soundtrack of Journey. The game itself leads you through the game without requiring an epic soundtrack and occasionally excites you with beautiful sounding music with Japanese influences. During the game, we often felt that the visual style was inspired by Spirited Away. The top view is breathtaking and worth the climb - even though we fell several times just before the top down, which caused the necessary frustration.

Besides the animals and Fethere are other beings known as The Silent Ones. They seem to be the baddies and capture all the animals. If they see you they catch you with a net and you have to start over. It is your job to save the forest and the wild beasts of these monsters, which also forms the "story" of the game. We use quotation marks because there are no dialogues and the game via cave-like drawings and flashbacks (which provide insight into the actions of The Silent Ones), when you pick up certain objects, tell everything. The lack of direct storytelling allows you to form your own interpretation. Are The Silent Ones based on man? Do we destroy nature? Are we no longer connected with nature? We did not dive directly into the forest to sing to animals,

The design involves collecting purple diamonds to learn new skills and use seed buds from plants to free animals from nets. You sing to plants and strange wondrous animals, and the more skills you learn, the more the world opens up. The idea of breaking the silence with a song is a wonderful mechanism. Every time you get lost, you can begin to sing, so that a small bird appears to show you the way. Our biggest criticism of the game is the 'pacing', which sometimes felt a bit too slow.

Conclusion

Fe is a beautiful, enchanting and artistic. Although not for everyone, but if you enjoyed titles like Journey or Abzû then it is definitely worth considering. It is strange and beautiful, surreal and frustrating, all at the same time. The lack of storytelling confused us, but made us think about the underlying meaning and our connection with nature. Are you a fan of explosive action-packed narrative adventures you can better skip Fe. This is a unique experience, unlike something we have played in recent times. If you are looking for something that blurs the boundary between art and games, then it is certainly a title that is worthwhile.

➕ Visually stunning; accessible; soundtrack perfectly sets the tone; interesting creatures.

➖ Frustrating when you fall all the way down and have to climb up again; sometimes a bit too slow.

Thanks for reading.
