With the recent release, Niantic has started with a small number of Kanto Region Pokemon first from the first generation. However, we know that these Mega evolutions continued to grow across many generations. I imagine that they will continue to rotate more of the Pokemon to help some favorite Pokemon come back into the spotlight once again.
However, there has been some back and forward within the community given how the system works. Currently, the only way to get to Mega Evolve Pokemon is using a new material or item called energy. Once you get enough from raiding or special research tasks, you can used the Mega Evolution for four hours. Then, the Pokemon goes back to normal until Energy is used once again. Many do not like that the mechanic is tied to Raids which still remain a challenge for some players despite drastic improvements from Niantic like remote raids and invites.
I think they will find ways to balance the concerns and make this another fun component of the game that will continue to grow the content for trainers to use. I have not been able to get enough energy for one yet because I have not been too interested in the original starter Pokemon although they can be shiny after defeating them in Raids. More Pokemons to add to the Pokedex!
