Ironman Leon #1: A Crusader Kings 2 AAR

in #gaming8 years ago

Hello Again Steem Folk!

Today I'm going to be doing an AAR on a different game. This time I'll be playing Crusader Kings 2, a game in a similar vein as Europa Universalis IV and made by the same company.

If you're unfamiliar with CK2, it takes place from 769 during the time of Charlemagne all the way to 1453. It is similar to EU4 in that there is conquest and nation building, however, with CK2 things differ in that you play as one character rather than an entire nation. You begin by choosing a character that is a count, duke, or king (among others) and then begin building your dynasty, which essentially means marrying and having kids.

The best way I heard it described was that you are the Don of a mafia and you want to expand your family's influence as far and wide as possible while keeping yourself in power.

The Campaign:

I've decided to start a campaign as Count Morvan of Leon. He's 29 and has average stats at best. As you can see, I've chosen to play Ironman with all the historical settings EXCEPT FOR SHATTERED RETREAT because it makes wars last forever and is stupid.

In this time period, Leon starts as a small county northwest of the Kingdom of West Francia. It is "de jure" part of the Kingdom of Brittany, but that title has yet to be created as the realm is shattered into several pieces. To the southwest lies a county ruled by a distant cousin of ours. The other two counties nearby are ruled by people we will come to know.

Count Morvan:

This is Count Morvan as a character. He begins with a son, so he already has an heir, but we want to find someone with good genetics to marry right away. We set our focus to grooming an heir.

We join the Hermetic society as it seems interesting. As a learned man, we wish to further our knowledge and discover the secrets of the world.

As we progress through the society's levels, we build a laboratory and create many strange artifacts such as a "handgun." We also end up writing a magnum opus chronicling our culminated knowledge.

Unfortunately for Count Morvan, he was captured in battle with a Sultan whose name I shall not speak during a siege in the Andalusian region. There, he died alone and far from home.

Count Concar:

Concar is a dull man, but one who excels on the field of battle. He is already married to a genius woman who we hope will give her genius to their children.

Our son Concar took over and immediately declared war, pressing his claim on the neighboring county of Domnon. The war is easy with our mighty army and commanders.

While dull, Concar's wife makes up for this by being a genius diplomat. We now have a daughter who will inherit Leon should we perish.

We build a hospital in Leon to help with the spread of disease and depopulation.

We take the nearby county of Kernev after our chancellor successfully fabricates a claim. There is only one more county standing between us and our kingdom.

After finally take the last county we need to form Brittany, we also join the Lucifer's Own cult. This will give us access to dark powers which God frown upon.

With the help of our allies in Bavaria and Lombardy, we manage to fight off a massive assault on our land by a Viking adventurer named Ovar who sought to take Leon. Once we accumulate the required wealth, we create the title "petty Kingdom of Brittany" and Concar is now know as King Concar of Briezh.

Shortly after uniting the kingdom, Concar dies a natural death, leaving his kingdom to his oldest surviving son (some tragedies struck his first few children), Morvan mab Concar.

Morvan has a long way to go before he can claim his throne, so we'll find out next time what happens!

Thanks for Reading Along!

Will Morvan make it to adulthood and claim the kingdom his father united? Will he be as great a ruler?

I look forward to finding out in the next episode.

I hope you've enjoyed reading along and I'll try to be more detailed next time.

This is P5ych0path, signing off!
