The Basics
Garry's Mod is extremely basic. Your main two weapons are the gravity gun, and physics gun. The gravity gun allows you to pick up free floating props, while the physics gun is used to pick up placed items from your inventory. Other than that, controls are basic, with Q being your inventory key rather than TAB.
Graphics
Graphics as of now are primitive but still nice. The game runs off the same engine half life used (Source). One issue is that without the purchase of Counterstrike Source, most of your textures are going to be missing. While you can easily get the game for free, its still a pain in the ass.

Sandbox
The sandbox allows the player to express his/her creative side. Sandbox mode allows you to spawn in anything from your inventory and use it however you like. From spawning in player models to form, and take a screenshot. Or spawning in a car to run over your friends. Sandbox mode is one of thousands of gamemodes i like.

Servers
There are so many game modes to choose from, its quite crazy. From Darkrp to death race, a player kind find a gamemode that suites them. This is the basis of gmod, and they did quite a good job on it.
Community
The gmod community is "iffy" at that. With a lot of younger children on, you will find yourself hitting the mute key quite a bit. Another thing is admins of servers can be kind of a pest. With unfair rules, shitty attitudes, and the bliss of ignorance, admins are a pain in the ass.
Ending
Gmod is a decent game, with a lot of content. Although an extra game is needed to make your game look good, i have no issues with it. At the price of only 10$ on steam, and probably cheaper on other sites; gmod is worth the buy.
