The time of the year has come when the eternal dandelion starts growing again. They're everywhere in this area and some of our neighbours do not care at all. We want to keep our yard from being overrun by dandelions.
You can see a few in the foreground. They already got (sparingly) sprayed upon a few days ago. Already dying.
These were done over a week ago.
Dying.
This shouldn't be sprayed liberally and the spraying should not be done very often. Reports on the toxicity of glyphosate are conflicting. Although Roundup has proven to be effective, I'm planning to try natural methods next.
Downvoted (-1%) for poisoning an edible native flower, essential for pollinators.
Believe me, there are enough of them in this area. There are many houses on our street whose owners do not care to remove them from their yards at all. All the damn public lawns have thousands upon thousands of them growing side by side. At this time of the year, public lawns tend to more more yellow than green. I'll reconsider eating them once we're so low in calories that there's nothing else to eat. Until then, I'll spray the foundations of the house and uproot them from the lawn where there are many old ones.
Pollinators will be just fine without dandelions taking over our whole yard.
When I read the term Mein Kampf, the first thing that came to mind wasn't dandelions. I hope you round em up good.
My Generalplan Hinterhof is to help my wife keep the weeds under control and plant some new flowers in the beds. We'll probably enlarge one bed this year because we won't be traveling this summer.
You could try vinegar next time. I'm conflicted about the use of herbicides but there are times when it's all you can do. They do break down in the soil, the main thing to do is try not to contaminate water sources with them
It's important to be very careful with them. They sell Roundup as a gel. It only takes a little of it to hit a weed to kill it by shutting down photosynthesis.
yes the gels that can be applied like that can be used very cleanly
Trouble is I don't like going on all fours after the weeds. The dispenser has a button you need to click to make drops come out of it. But maybe I can use tape to attach it to a stick which would allow me to walk around and give each dandelion a reverse Midas touch.

For paths you could try boiling water. It doesn't always get right down into the roots, but keep on top of it and any plant dies with leaves eventually. It's a tough call, if your neighbours keep letting theirs go to seed. If it was your own yard, then just getting to them before they flower would be enough.
Other alternatives; you could start a dandelion root coffee business; get a rabbit or guinea pig and call them free food (or chuck them in your own salad). 😉
Heh.
For paths boiling water could work. For lawn, I think Roundup in gel form could work while having fewer downsides.
