Garden Update - Sprouting veggies, potatoes, garlic, orach and tree seeds

in #gardening5 years ago

We got another break from the rain and today was a nice sunny day! Couldn't pass up the opportunity to enjoy this day in the garden - prepping beds, planting, making compost, planting trees, prop work in the greenhouse... so much to do and it's all fun!

In the Greenhouse

A lot of seeds are sprouting... every day something new is coming up. The greenhouse is now bustling with new life!

This flat of broccoli is coming up nicely!! I could have seeded it earlier but it won't take long before its ready to be transplanted out in the garden!

The skullcap seeds are coming up! I am excited, skullcap is one of my favorite #naturalmedicine - I had stratified in late winter and then brought it into the greenhouse a few weeks ago when it started warming up.

Everything is sprouting in this flat of leeks, onions, parsley, broccoli and basil! Soon I will be able to transplant the onions and leeks.

Outside In the Garden

This end of a long bed didn't do too well last year. The thick clay soil was somewhat compacted and plants that were in the last few feet of the bed were stunted and didn't grow very well. So earlier this winter I dumped a few wheelbarrows of composted manure on it. Now I've worked it into the soil.

On the very end I planted Jerusalem artichokes. Then I dug a trench and planted a few Rose Fin potatoes that we bought from a local farmer. After that I transplanted some garlic that was missed from last years harvest. They took to the transplant pretty well!

The garlic that was planted in January is coming up really nicely!

This is a recent massacre of some plum seed that I planted last fall. They were from some very small orange wild plums that are growing on my friends property. The pit is free stone and it tastes so sweet, almost like an apricot. Last week the plums were starting to sprout. This week some critter decided to eat all the sprouts! I noticed some digging in the other pots where I had planted plums, so I brought them all to a safer location. I might have to move my nursery if this keeps happening.

We've got some purple sweet potatoes in potting soil in the greenhouse. This is our first attempt to grow sweet potatoes and are hoping it will send up some shoots soon that we can plant as slips.

Purple Orach is starting to volunteer in our garden en-masse. True to our Seeds of Abundance philosophy that nature provides abundantly! The green carpet behind the Purple Orach is Larkspur which has also reseeded quite readily!

The purple orach babies are so beautiful.

And finally I got some more tree seeds in pots that had been stratifying in the fridge. Pawpaw, sichuan pepper, linden, witch hazel, monkey puzzle, raisin tree and sumac.

That's it for now! Wishing you abundance in your garden :)

Everything looks so healthy. You are going to have an amazing garden for sure. We have snow flying today, lol hopefully the last of it. My greenhouse is full and coming nicely too.

Thank you @sunscape :) Awesome! I am glad to hear your greenhouse is happy and busting! Good luck with the snow.. but isn't it nice to have all the time to prepare for when the snow finally melts?

I agree with the above comments - I just love your greenhouse!
Your article and photos have definetly inspired me to do better outside.

Thanks! I love it too and I appreciate my landlord for building it and letting us use it while we stay here :) Aww I am glad I inspired you in some way in your garden :) I hope you have a wonderful 2019 season in your garden!

Very nice.
I can imagine that it took a lot of effort to build and maintain this.

Also, not just the effort to build the GREENHOUSE and to maintain it but for those Purple Orach, pawpaw, pepper and some other seeds to equally germinate very prettywell that's the joy of a farmer as well.

Thank you @mathewtonyit :) I love trying new seeds in the garden!!

Well I can only take credit for building the seed flats.. the greenhouse was built by my landlord - and I am very sure it was a labor of love! I am very lucky to have access to use it and also garden space while we are living here!

Oh man! So much going on. I've never heard of orach! Must be nice to get out in garden and see all those babies grow!

OMG.. if you like spinach/greens.. you must grow orach! It is very nice to be with the thousands/millions of life out there!! :)

The leeks look tiny, how do you transplant it? We haven't seeded ours yet. We transplant when it's at least 20 cm high.

Posted using Partiko Android

Yeah they are tiny still! I will wait for them to be bigger before transplanting so that we can get some blanched stem. 20cm is pretty tall, but a good idea... I hope they get that big before I lose patience! This is my second year growing my own leeks :)

Wow, good to see the GREENHOUSE coming out with a new life through many sprout out of new seeds. Im so happy I finally joined the @homesteaderscoop. I'm already in the discord. Likewise Please. I want to the @tribesteemup is there any new rules guiding it or discord channel as well? Thanks @sagescrub

As I understand tribesteemup members and discord channel is invite only due to they are at or close to max capacity. I was lucky to be invited in recognition of my contributions with Homesteaders Co-op. Thanks for asking :)

Oh, how different this photo looks from when you posted the "Did the strawberries make it?" one a while back! It looks lovely in the greenhouse. Bummer about the plums though. :(( Living vicariously... :))

Hehe thank you! I will get more of those plums from my friends this fall and try again next season if no plums make it ;) No worries.. I suspect I will have many other trees to deal with this summer.

Love the green house. I can't wait to start growing again it so frustrating not being able too grrr 💯🐒

How much longer do you have before you start your seeds? Will you start any indoors?

Well I have a few on the go now but am looking to move so don't want to get too much on the go to be honest. It's a dilemma really, I am kinda sat in limbo and it's annoying haha 💯🐒

Oh I gotcha!!! I feel you. Good luck with finding the balance through it all! I hope there is another garden space waiting for you after the move!

Ohh it's there and waiting to be developed, when the time is right it will come to me. Although now have some nice peppers, chilli, beetroot and radish on the go ... Couldn't wait 💯🐒

How fun! our peppers are just starting to come up... it will be worth the wait :)

For sure one of my favourite ingredients 💯🐒
