Geeksplosion!!!!!!!!

in #geek6 months ago

Well, it's that time of the year again. A time when Spider-Men and Pokémen stride side by side and stop in their tracks when they spot a Jinx or a Winx. The time where people of all races, creeds, countries or planets of origin, sexual orientations, ages, schools of magic, D&D classes and gender identities all unite under the banner of... GEEKDOM!!!!!!

That's right. It is time once again for the greatest nerd-fest on the planet: C2E2 (The Chicago Comic and Entertainment Expo), or as I like to call it... HEAVEN!

I am lucky enough to have been at every single C2E2 since it began in a single room of the McCormick Place Convention Center way back in 2010. It sprung from a desire to stop the suckage of the Wizard World convention I had attended for over 20 years. By the time 2010 rolled around, it was time to put Wizard World out of its misery. By then, it had devolved into a crowded, boring cash grab. After 15 years, C2E2 has become a crowded, awesome, exciting, fun... cash grab. But at least us geeks are getting something for our money.

Do you like The Lord of the Rings (in other words, "is water wet")? Of course you do. And that is why Elijah Wood, Andy Serkis, Sean Astin, Dominic Monaghan, Billy Boyd, and John Rhys-Davies will all be there. This is the first time all of the Hobbits will be together since they got wasted and shut down The Prancing Pony (not the Pink Pony Club... but that place sounds incredibly fun too!).

Not into The Lord of the Rings? That's weird... but it's a free country. How about Star Wars then? John Boyega will be there to answer questions like, "What the hell was the point of the casino planet in The Last Jedi?" "What was the point of making Luke an asshole in The Last Jedi?" Actually, "What was the point of making The Last Jedi?"

Or maybe you have no soul and you don't like fantasy or sci-fi. Have no fear. There is something for you too. How about a reunion of the cast of the 80s classic The Breakfast Club? Yes, that beautiful movie about a band of suburban kids who go from strangers to best friends in one afternoon. The same one with lessons like, "If you threaten to assault someone, they will most likely have sex with you and become your girlfriend." Or, "Dressing like yourself is for losers. Change your entire appearance just to please the cool wrestler." And of course, "Teachers are losers."

You may think I'm being too cynical about some of the guests, but this is all just my way of staying balanced. I know I am about to be insanely elated over the next couple of days. If I don't balance it with some snark, I may suffer a GEEKSPLOSION!!!!!

Sort:

Omg I love comic festivals! There’s a few going on here in Croatia and it’s always a pleasure to go🥹🤘🏻. I hope you had the greatest time!!!

Good to see you back on Hive. I've never been to a comics event, but then I got into them late (well since I was reading them as a kid). I see that @arseniclullaby will be in Chicago so you should look out for him.

!BEER

Yeah I have some time again and thought this would be fun.

What, no Liv Tyler. I only show up for A listers. Just kidding. Sounds like a really cool event. I've always wanted to attend a proper convention. Most of the ones I go to are just for public educators and they are kind of lame...

Oh my god. My wife hates her so much. We love LOTR but she cringes when Liv is on the screen. I was fine with her. I was just at a teacher convention myself. This was much more fun ;)

I bet! They just had a technology one here in Michigan where I work. It's mostly for teachers, not the actual techs. We have one in the fall up north that is just for the Education IT folks. I'm actually not a huge Liv fan, I'm not surprised she wouldn't be there. Were any of the people from the new Amazon Prime show there?

None of the actors but surprisingly there were a lot of cosplayers dressed as those characters.

That doesn't surprise me. I've been watching the show, but I have been finding it kind of hard to follow and not as engaging as some others. The Wheel of Time has been great though I have never read any of the books.

I've been going to MegaCon in Orlando almost since it started. Crowds have gotten pretty insane but it is always a blast.

Yeah same here. It has grown tremendously but is still a ton of fun.

Here's a link to C2E2 if you want to see what else they have to offer. https://www.c2e2.com/en-us.html

For some added fun, I'll give a full upvote (which I think is $1) to whoever finishes this poem with the funniest line:

"Dressed as a Wookiee, I roar down the street,
Fur in my mouth and no shoes on my feet.
Spent all my credits on comics and flair,
Now I just hope _____________________!"

...to avoid gum in my hair!

Let's make this official. You win!

Yay! Sometimes you just win by turning up.

well done! In the running. Let's see if anyone else notices and tries.
