Genealogy - Alienore de Crawcumbe (1254-1298)

I'm experimenting with posting some random bits of my genealogy research here. This individual was born circa 1254 which is definitely going pretty far back. The key to getting this far back in your family tree is finding one or more relatives that are related to royalty, no matter how distantly. If you are of European descent this isn't as difficult as it might sound. Chances are there is royalty in your genealogy somewhere, it's just a matter of getting far enough back to link. In the U.S., records are pretty good going back to the mid 1800s and even further depending on location (for instance, Boston was very good at record keeping going much further back). That's probably not far enough to find a link to royalty for most people. You'll need to get back another 100-200 years, give or take, and that is probably the most difficult part. Then, if you do find that royal link, chances are their ancestry is reasonably well documented going back a few hundred years further or even more.

Gramps calculates this person to be my 21st Great Grandmother. Or at least that't the closest relationship. The other thing you will find if you make it this far back is that you are probably related in multiple ways. Let's face it, you could marry a distant cousin and never know. Prior to the industrial revolution, it was quite common for people to marry to relations as close as 4th cousins. Until the 1860s it was actually pretty common for first cousins to marry. In fact, according to this article, marriage to 1st or 2nd cousins make up 80% of all the marriages in human history and still account for at least 10% of marriages worldwide today.

Research comes from a variety of online sources, original documents and personal knowledge. Generally, if the source was from another researcher online, their original sources are used. The information below is an extract from a report I generated via the Gramps genealogy software from a family tree I originally created with GenoPro and then modified to look reasonable here (as much as I could anyway).
