I am quite certain that most people know who Andy Samberg is as he has gone on to very high levels of fame. However, back before most people had any idea who the dude was he was teamed up with a few pals (Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone) to make what I consider to be some seriously funny videos.
Obviously as they (mostly Andy) gained more fame and networked with some Hollywood powerhouses their videos gained in popularity and production value but even their older stuff such as "Cool Guys Don't Look at Explosions" are great fun.
When I watch some of these videos I can just imagine how incredibly fun it must be to hang out with these guys and it actually reminds me of a trio of fledgling film-makers I knew when I was young... because i was one of them. Me and a couple pals would brainstorm and make absurd videos and spend, sometimes weeks, making a video that was just a few minutes long in total. The boredom of youth... However i think our parents were happy we weren't out doing drugs and getting arrested like some of our high-school buddies.
Anyway, this isn't about me. We'll start you off with one of their more absurd videos that I can't believe they managed to turn it into something funny. It is completely rediculous and obviously they were already pretty famous at this point because they have some cameos from SNL people in it also.
There are dozens more videos and since they likely don't make much money from making them it makes me think that these childhood pals are just doing it for the fun and that is pretty cool.
This one is a bit more explicit so if you are easily offended by course language skip it. But it does showcase the sort of crazy crap these guys come up with and make just for fun
So if you find yourself aimlessly cruising youtube (I wonder if they are on DTube?) then i think you can do worse than The Lonely Island. My apologies if this humor is juvenile, but I'm afraid I never grew up all the way.
No shame in liking The Lonely Island. Yeah, they've got a juvenile streak but they understand the tropes they are parodying enough to really sell it and often take a non-obvious route while doing it. Like twisting the YOLO phrase into a track about fearing everything or a song about someone telling you to shake your ass on the dancefloor and turning it into something darker as they tell you to do more and more insane things. Plus they know how to sneak in something smart into something stupid. Spring Break Anthem does this masterfully by juxtaposing all the spring break college antics with a gay wedding leaving you with the question of which is actually damaging to society.
Also, if you enjoyed Hot Rod and like what these guys do check out Popstar: Never Stop Stopping at some point. Some of their best work is in there.
