Who holds the power of government?
In a republican government, the power of government is vested in the hands of the people. Contrast that with hereditary monarchies and tyrannical dictatorships, in which power is vested in a single person. Under republican government, the people cede limited power to the state only for the purpose of securing their rights to “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” But if the people themselves are to hold the power of government, they must possess personal virtue and wisdom sufficient to exercise that power responsibly. That is precisely why the Founders believed that only a moral and religious people were suited to republican government. They believed that those not steeped in God’s Word and not personally bound by the Ten Commandants could not be trusted to rule. They pointed to the teetering societies of Europe in which the people wanted only “luxury, indolence, amusement, and pleasure.” Have we lost our virtue to the point of risking the loss of our republic? Is government encroaching because we don’t have the moral compass to recognize it, or the moral courage to stop it? Isn’t it time we restore America’s culture?
