I Would Study Geology

in #gold7 years ago

If you could take an extracurricular educational class at a University for pure enjoyment or further education on a subject, what would you choose?

I would choose to study Geology.

Rocks fascinate me. There is something about the hunt of an object that already exists that intrigues me. Am I smart enough to figure out where the valuable rocks/minerals are (perhaps gold/silver)? Can I use science and my knowledge to make some extra money finding valuable items? Can I outsmart others and discover the valuable natural resources first? Can I be more efficient or innovative in order to maximize the collection?

Here is a cool paperweight rock that is on my office desk:

I confess that I do not know much about geology at the moment, but if I ever find time to understand where rocks/minerals are, how they formed, and what sort of profit potential might be out there to get them, I plan to do so!

I have done a little looking around/research on this in my area in California – there is granite (I love granite countertops), gold, silver, copper, cement powder and other minerals in my area. Perhaps as my kids get older, we can make this a new hobby – rock hounding and mineral collecting. I have also seen some “free” webinars online where prestigious Universities (like Stanford) have made some past presentations/classes available online. There is also a centralized website where you can find US Geological Surveys, including mineral makeup of lots of areas in the USA. There are also websites which show where active and retired mines are, which can give clues as to what treasures you might find and what others have found figured to be profitable enough to begin mining.

All of this seems fun to me! So what would you choose?

Brian

as a little guy i always loved collecting precious stones :)
Thanks for sharing your post :)

Very interesting to read this! There are many treasures lay on earth... But it's took a knowledge and hard work to figure out where they hidden that is why geology is very important one's must study to help discovered those hidden treasures ... Will be glad if you can site where you found those helpful webinar .. thx for sharing @brian.rrr

Thanks for commenting! I was finding many when I initially looked but haven’t really spent time watching or reading anything so I don’t have a good recommendations. Here is one website that had a lot of resources that you can check out... would love to hear any feedback or better things you find! https://study.com/academy/topic/minerals-overview.html

I will definitely do... Will look into it and get back to you.

I certanly choose to study Geology. When I was young I made the basic minerals collection by degrees of hardness but always missed the 10 degree Diamond.
Now I only have a small rough diamond, maybe its time to complete again the collection.

That is cool... yeah, I think I would enjoy something like that too!

Geology is one of my favorite side to study .

Rocks are fascinating indeed and geology is quite interesting.

But there's no way on Earth anybody could drag me back to school of any shape or form! :P

My wife loves crystals and geology but I've never actually thought of trying to find them before. I know here in the UK there was a place where 'Blue John' was really common when my Dad was a kid, he collected a whole tin full of the stuff, then, as it started to become more rare the value shot up! Turns out the place he was finding it was the only place in the world that it ever occurred!

Me, I would study Astronomy my friend. All my life I've been dreaming of studying the universe and its mysteries. I also love to travel in space if given the chance. Thanks for this :)

Your paperweight rock looks so cool. Did you bought it or collected it? rock hounding and mineral collecting isn't bad though. When you will get a long vacation you can go for your hobby. @brian.rrr

Thanks for stopping by! I won this paperweight in a charity silent auction for $35... I have no idea what it is worth (could be worth $5 of $50??) or what kind of rock it is! Ha!

What a great idea. For me it would be Astronomy. I have always been curious about the universe around us. There is so much to discover and explore that I think we have just touched the tip of the iceberg in this area. I'd love to know more about the comets that have passed us by or even made contact with earth. The vastness of the universe always leads to that question of life beyond earth. To learn more about the makeup of different planets and to fully understand the impact of the changes we are experiencing here on earth. I have heard of these services that will provide people with the opportunity to go into space for a short ride. As much is this is going to be mind blowingly expensive I think it would be amazing! Maybe my crypto will get me there. haha

That would be cool to study as well! Thanks for stopping by!

Hi brian.rrr, I too share this interest with you. I look forward to someday being able to identify let's say peridot or malachite in it's raw form. Can you imagine how exhilarating this would be? I am quite interested in checking out some of the websites you mentioned, specially ones including the mineral makeup of certain areas. Thank you for your post and for re-sparking my curiosity regarding this subject:0)

Thanks for the response! Here is a link to a US Geoloical Survey website that can show what minerals they have found in different areas of the US and it looks like they have some global maps as well... good luck! https://mrdata.usgs.gov

Thank you kindly brian.rrr for sharing this great resource, I appreciate your time!

I would choose physics because there are some Certain unimaginable things concerning the flight of airplane, how realistic it is for paper to get down before a stone while on a free fall, how human has to suspended at the level of gravity, alot that physics reveals but the time and years to go into it,that's the issue

Rocks are really cool and fascinating! I'm more of a plants guy, so I would go with ethnobiology because I think in the future we will start to find amazing uses and capabilities of plants

Smart and clever men make money even with the stones said my grandfather. Now I understand why he said it.

I think geology is a great choice, maybe history or english lit for me

very interesting your message about what you should study for fun, taking things as well as political science, I think I can be very cruel and just being a judge hahahaha. thank God I do not have it because I have many enemies and geology that I will love for a mom who was already my other career for fun, thanks for commenting this I began to remember some years ago where I wanted to study to prepare, greetings.
@calitoo

Wow its interesting to read this.
I have always been curious about the universe around us.
And i am very interested to zoology ☺☺😎

There is nothing we can compare to acquiring knowledge
We need to always seek to know more...keep it up boss
Acquire knowledge on geology ,it will benefit you

nice post! I would study programming already its the bedrock of so many inventions and so many to come its only natural that I should at least know the basics.

Well coming from a sr as smart as you when I grow up I want to study geology.

i am very interested to geology.....keep it up.....

sounds like a good idea!

la geologia es la antesala de la arquitectura.

Geology is not my subject, so I do not like reading too much.

Haha, well, you could always watch the lectures online... some people learn better by hearing and visuals than by reading!

upvoted..funny I considerred seriously geology...choise history!

I would take a course on electricity. Very fascinating to me.

I think if there is money for investment in the extraction of resources, then this is a successful business.

I like geology......... wonder full post........ I like the post......
