Hitchhiking can be quite stressful from time to time. Especially if you are two guys trying to get a lift out of Warsaw after a night of zero sleep and tiring walks through unfriendly-looking suburban labyrinths. On our way to the highway exit, we met a lanky boy from Russia, who was on a crazy six week trip through Europe to find the latest rainbow gathering, somewhere in the Croatian woods. Together we walked down the highway, three hobos, dirty, wasted, in a very good mood, but probably not the kind of people, that people wanted to have in their car. The cars whiz past us for hours like colorful balls in a pinball machine, at first we didn't mind, but when the evening started we were a bit worried because we wanted to reach Vilnius that day, but of course, we didn't.
In the end, we got picked up by a Polish trucker, who kicked us out at a small village, close to the Belarusian border. It was night by this time and there were hardly any cars left in the street, so we decided to build our tent somewhere and stay for the night. From the only open gas station we were chased away by a group of gritty truckers and in the nearby forest, we got attacked by a group of street dogs that we fought off with some stones. Finally, we found an abandoned looking backyard were we put our tent and had some hours of restless sleep. We woke up in the early morning by the smell of burnt plastic just to discover that an old Polish dude was making a huge fire his residual waste a few meters from our tent. Badly smashed and with stiff limbs we crawled back to the street. That moment when the morning sun finally flashed behind the mountains gave us a an indescribable feeling of happiness in our pretty battered souls. We gained some hope and made it to Vilnius the same day.
