In mid-January the Project Stream trial period ended with Assassin's Creed Odissey and, after about a month, Google returns to talk about gaming together with a mysterious event that will be held in March. The Mountain View company has sent out invitations for a presentation on March 19th, which will probably talk about videogames and Project Stream itself. In the invitation we see only the end of a tunnel.
With Project Stream Google has tried to respond to the typical challenges of running a video game in streaming, whose frames are rendered by a remote computer and transmitted even on devices with hardware not dedicated to gaming. It is a sector in which some competitors already participate, with the streaming that could revolutionize the gaming market as well as the streaming has already done with music and film.
As a first step, Google is expanding its cloud infrastructure to meet the needs of such a platform, competing so directly with NVIDIA and, soon, even with Microsoft. With Project Stream, the first users were able to use the technology with a AAA console title directly on Chrome, both on Mac and on Windows, using an internet connection of at least 25 Mbps.
Furthermore, if the March 19 event will be on Project Stream, it is likely that Google will use the GDC to provide further details on how third-party developers can bring their games to the platform. According to some rumors, Google has worked throughout 2018 on a project called "Yeti", which was described as a service with related hardware (in the form of a Chromecast dongle) related to gaming.
In addition, in 2018, the company hired a world veteran PlayStation and other high-level gaming developers. Google does not want to leave the video game industry uncovered, but to learn more about the company's plans, we have to wait for the official announcement of March 19th to be held at the Game Developers Conference.
