Why are modern medical procedures so expensive?
The general answer to this question would be to attribute the high prices to the greediness of Big Pharmaceutical who wanted to continually fill their pockets. However, there are deeper reasons that could be the cause of the high prices that comes with medical procedures and medicine. First, the United States is one of the leading countries when it comes to medical advancements and technology that spearheads the spread of knowledge and assistance to other countries. We have organizations that take aid to developing countries that are unable to support their own people. While a lot of support for these organizations is through donations, our knowledge that is spread to them and the support to the doctors could lead to higher prices due to the need to continue encouraging these programs. Additionally, there are charity-funded hospitals that aid children with cancer and rare diseases. Because the United States tries to continually fund research into advanced medicines and technologies there is a reasonable need for higher prices for medical processes. However, I do agree there are unnecessarily high prices for highly important medicines that are actually fairly easy to produce, such as insulin, EpiPen, and inhalers. This price gouging I blame solely on the Big Pharmaceutical's money greedy tendencies.
