The Movie I will be discussing is Poverty Inc. which is a film that goes over poverty in other countries. Starting off the film, individuals discuss the poverty problem throughout other countries and why these problems are occurring. The whole film is solely based around an abundant supply of materials or foods, most individuals in the U.S. believe it is in their best interest to donate goods and supplies to other countries when a natural disaster hits or in some cases if they are already living in poverty. What the movie discussed is that these individuals may only need these items to be donated for a very short period. After this short period, this creates a crash in their market because there is no demand for that product in their economy anymore. Thousands of people lose jobs and have nowhere to live and nothing to eat, and families break up because of this. Other individuals in the United States sometimes choose to adopt a child, sometimes even if they already have a family. This is also because of the crash in the market, families cannot make enough money to feed themselves let alone their own families. One example of a market crash in this economy would be second-hand clothing when donating clothing to the less fortunate creates a free market forcing sellers who specialize in clothing to eventually shut down because they are unable to compete with the free products. The reason this is entrepreneurial is worse than good, the American government and other working individuals chose to allow this abundance of resources to be donated because of the large amounts of profit and recognition. In other ways, the harsh situations can also be viewed as entrepreneurial, towards the end of the film necklaces are being made by a smaller company based in the middle of this poverty-filled community. With this sudden act of entrepreneurship, lots of individuals can make enough money to fully support their families.
I feel this film is interesting because the United States has admitted to doing wrong but not to why it was done, everyone knows why it was done and that it was very wrong. Farmers and retailers were able to continue their profits while being convinced it was for the better while the higher-ups watched as everything crashed and became worse. Some of these countries live completely different lives from the everyday American and most people aren't even aware of it. Lots of these people also have great ideas but with the refusal of the U.S. and the continuing crash of the market it is tough for these people to succeed.
Society attempts to do everything it can, but they are being pointed in the wrong direction. Funding from non-profit companies is being put towards more goods and materials causing this crash to continue to happen. Other individuals believe the supply of these items needs to stop and then the organizations can start other groups to help open up more job opportunities which are exactly what these individuals are wanting. To Americans there is hardly any effect at all, besides controversial discussions, almost nobody has any problems regarding situations like this. Individuals aware of these wrongful acts are furious and do not support the situation whatsoever. The interaction is very two-sided, you are either for the funding which causes the markets to crash or you are against it and want them to stop allowing for more job opportunities and entrepreneurial ideas.
