Cars in the 50's

For our 3rd discussion post, we are expected to watch Tucker: The man and his Dream and write about its connection to entrepreneurship. Tucker is a movie based on a natural person named Preston Tucker, who was alive from 1903 to 1956 and his automobile dreams. Preston Tucker, at 16, began repairing and remodeling cars and then selling them. Tucker used the profit to buy more materials and make more cars; he dreamed of one day building the best automobile in the world. Tucker and his family have spent the last 15 years thinking about and designing the car. To make Tucker's dream car, he will need lots of labor and money, of which he has none. To get more funding, Tucker gets a hold of a businessman named Abe Karatz. Abe was a former crook, but he turned his life around; he’s now Tucker's business partner and advisor. Abe doesn’t think it's brilliant for Tucker to get into the automobile business, and he should just give up. Tucker doesn’t give up, though; he gets an idea for an excellent way to advertise the car. Tucker bought a page in a magazine to promote his car, and a few days after the advertisement was released, around 150,000 letters showed up in the mail inquiring about Tucker's car.
Tucker Preston is an entrepreneur who found a societal problem and decided to fix it. Tucker's car was becoming viral; everyone wanted one, but Tucker hadn’t even built the car. Tucker agreed to advertise and sell the vehicle before he created it. Abe thought this was all a bad idea, but he chose to have hope in Tucker and pray for a miracle. Tucker realized that cars at this time were extremely unsafe, so he designed a car super safe car. Tucker's car was way ahead of its time; the world wasn’t ready for such an improvement. The purpose of this movie was to show the different challenges and pressures an entrepreneur will face in the business world. The film discusses Tucker and how dedicated he was to his dream, the societal pressures facing him, and his financial challenges.
Tucker: The man and his Dream did a great job of showing how in the entrepreneurial business, success isn’t guaranteed, even if you have a perfect product. The business world is constantly changing, and not everyone has a place in it. Even when everyone was against him, Tucker continued to work on his dream. Many people believed that Tucker was unethical and that he was scamming his investors, but that just wasn’t true. Tucker Preston was an entrepreneur that had a dream of building cars. Tucker has dedicated the last 15 years and every cent of his to making his dream car. Tucker and his family have spent the past few years collecting scrap metal and building cars. Tucker’s son even stayed home from college to help his dad build. Tucker has his mind set on his dream and will do anything to make it happen. Tucker spent the last of his money to buy an advertisement in a magazine. The ad was for the car which Tucker called “The Tucker.” Tucker's dedication to making a safe and affordable car is very inspiring.
In America, innovation and individualism are a part of our culture that help our country grow. Everyone strives to be different, and people constantly make innovations daily. Tucker is one of the people who create innovations. Tucker discovered the need in his society for safer and more affordable cars and did something about it. Tucker designed a vehicle with the engine in the trunk and seat belts on all seats for safety. Although there is always a market for innovation in America, many factors will affect a business's success rate. Those factors include institution obstructions, money, and societal pressures. Tucker's institutional obstacles in the movie were the Big Three Automobile corporations. The Big Three Automobile corporations are large corporations that purchase most of the materials needed to build cars.
Tucker thinks he can get around them by calling on Senator Homer Ferguson's good side, but that doesn’t happen. Homer Ferguson is very friendly with the Big Three Automobile corporations and plans to take down Tuckers company. Money is significant in running a business, and Tucker didn’t have much of it. Tucker didn’t come from a wealthy family and worked hard for every penny he made. Tucker tries to help his money problems by asking around his community for people to purchase stock in his company. This works for a while, but the company stockholders get impatient with Tucker and want their money back. During this movie, Tucker experienced a lot of pressure from society. Society constantly tells Tucker that he won’t be successful and should just quit. Even Abe told Tucker he wanted out of the business because he didn’t believe it would ever work out. Although tucker needs the relationship between him and society, he doesn't care about what they say and continues to follow his dreams. This movie shows how important it is to follow your dreams and never give up because it might just work out one day.
The main takeaway from this movie is that you should always read every detail of a contract before signing it. If you don’t read every part of the contract, you could sign away all of your rights. Some companies in the business world will attempt to hide specific contract details to trick you. In the Movie, Mr. Binnington does this exact thing. Mr. Binnington declared in his contract with Tucker that if he signed it, Mr. Binnington would now own the company. Tucker gets ahead of himself and signs the contract before reading every detail. Tucker, completely unaware, gave away ownership to the company he started. Since Mr. Binningtoon owns the company, he can make any changes. Mr. Binningtion decides that It would be in his best interest to shut down Tucker's company, and there is nothing Tucker can do about it. Tucker destroyed his dream when he signed the contract without carefully ready every detail. Tucker: A man and his Dream did a great job of showing the real world of business. The movie showed how being an entrepreneur is hard and takes a lot of dedication.
