Really, it's hard for me to think of anything that should land you in prison for possession.

I'm with all of you that Griner shouldn't be in prison for breaking an unjust law enforcement by a disgusting dictatorship.
Still, how many of you passionately support the idea that outsiders should always respect the customs of the place that they're visiting? How many of you thought that John Allen Chau got what was coming to him when he went to North Sentinel Island? We can all agree that Chau knew the risks and suffered them without much controversy. I think there would be controversy if that were to be said about Griner. Well, I'm saying it.
Even in the United States, there have been similar instances in which people have been thrown in jail due to minor details, slight differences in laws, or miscommunications.
People still falsely say that Kyle Rittenhouse illegally "crossed state lines" with a gun. Even if that were true, you're making the argument that it was crossing the line from one set of laws to the next made Rittenhouse wrong.
People have been jailed in New York for traveling there with a gun after calling the TSA and local authorities to make sure that they were compliant with the local laws. They've been jailed either for missing a tiny detail or because the state gave them bad information. Where is your outrage about this?
If a Western woman travels to Saudi Arabia and walks around in a crop top, and gets murdered by a mob, are you going to say that the woman got what was coming to her for not respecting the culture; or, are you going to criticize the culture?
Seriously, the most important thing is to not see Brittney Griner's life permanently destroyed over one mistake, while the second most important thing is to learn what we need to from this story. What we need to learn is that our moral calculations will always be incoherent, and dumb, and dangerous when we reject the idea that moral truth is universal.
If moral truth doesn't exist in your mind, you have no right to bitch about what Russia is doing to Brittney Griner.
