Super intensive farming of shrimps is often referred to as “raceway” systems, as they resemble racing stripes – far longer than they are wide. These nurseries for nurturing shrimp until they may be harvested are enclosed and covered in greenhouses. These structures are equipped with systems where water is filtered and recirculated so that the old water is dumped and fresh water is recirculated inside the ponds.
The density of the shrimp populations in super-intensive systems means that water quality must be monitored carefully in order to avoid any disease outbreak and contamination.
