I had a friend that swallowed the mercury in the thermostat of his hallway in his home to kill himself and it didn't work he was not the same after that ever again.
It's easy to accidently drop an old glass thermometor and cause some harm by inhaling the resulting mercury vapors. To be an old timey hatmaker was bad enough for ones health, I don't even want to imagine the mental impairments caused by swallowing the stuff.

Agreed! Both of those metals have antimicrobial properties. It's ridiculous to use known toxins when safe alternatives exist.
