Hip Pain - 3 Reasons Why Yours Might Not Be Going Away!!

in #health6 years ago

#1 Referral Pain

Pain that is felt in the hip ofter originates from dysfunction or trauma outside of the hip capsule.
Structures such as the lumbar spine facet joints (joints in the low back), and sacroiliac joint capsule (pictured below) are full of pain receptors which, when traumatised, can refer pain into the hip and groin. If treatment only focusses on the 'hip joint' and surrounded soft tissue structures, the true cause of the problem may be missed.

#2 The Hip Joint is the only guy doing his job!.... and is worn out.
Let's say you are in a team of 4 at work... and one guy does nothing to help out, he's not the one that burns out and has a breakdown! It's one of the other 3 that have taken up 133% of their own duties that are more likely to end up chucking it in. The same applies to the Lumbar spine/Pelvis/Hip complex. If the lumbar spine and/or pelvis are dysfunctional, the hip may be having to bear more load than it would normally. If this is the case for an extended period of time, soft tissue structures wear out, joint capsules wear out, inflammation comes to the area to try and repair damage, and degenerative changes can set in. Treatment approaches need to focus on the entire spine and pelvis if dysfunction is to be overcome long term. Even the cervical spine (neck) may need to be examined and corrected as reversal of neck curve has been shown to change a persons centre of gravity, and cause a reflex change to pelvic tilt and lumbar lordosis!

#3 The treatment approach was not heavy enough to address the amount of chronic change that had occurred!
Most of the people that come into a chiropractic office, are not coming in for health maintenance (unfortunately), or an injury that occurred yesterday! Most have been to the GP, and the Physio, and maybe the Massage therapist as well... and have finally decided to give Chiropractic a go.
If the hip pain experienced is being caused by dysfunction that has been taking place over 5, 10, 20+ years... 3 visits to any practitioner isn't going to cut it. The treatment approach has to first be of sufficient volume to overcome the existing pattern of movement, dysfunction, and likely neurological adaptation or derangement. Then the new pattern needs to be applied in sufficient volume to become 'the new norm'. In many cases, due to chronic degenerative changes that may include bony spurring, and nerve fibre infiltration, although improvement can be made, the person is likely to never return to full or optimal function in that particular part of the body.
