What is Lyme Disease?
Lyme disease is an infection caused by the spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi, and that can be acquired from a tick bite . These ticks that live in wooded areas and survive by attaching to a certain host. The infection with the spirochete stimulates inflammatory cytokines and autoimmune mechanisms.
Stages of Lyme Disease ( Signs and Symptoms)
First Stage
Symptoms that occur for several days to months with or following the bites
Small red pimple like rash develops and that may spread to a form of a 'ring shape rash', this rash may also occur anywhere on the body.
The 'ring-shaped rash' may occur in big or small size.
Flulike symptoms like headaches, neck stiffness, aching muscles, and unexplainable fatigue.
Second Stage
This second stage occurs several weeks following the bite.
Pain in joints may happen
With some neurological complications
And Cardiac complications
Third Stage
Large joints become more involved
Progression of arthritis
What to do with the person who has a Lyme disease?
- Gently remove the tick using tweezers
- Wash the skin with antiseptic solution appropriately and
- Dispose the tick by flushing it down to the toilet or place it in a sealed jar so that health care provider can inspect it and determine its type.
- Blood test is performed, 4 to 6 weeks after the bite in order to detect the presence of the disease. Testing before the bite is not reliable.
- Administration of antibiotics may be recommended per doctor's prescription. Usually, antibiotic taking is initiated immediately by the healthcare provider, even the blood testing result is unknown.
- Instruct the client to avoid places prone to tick bites or that contain lots of ticks, like wooden grassy areas, especially in the summer months.
- Instruct the client to wear long-sleeved tops, long pants, closes shoes, and hats while outside.
- Instruct the client to use tick repellant sprays before going outside.
- Instruct the client to examine and determine the body for any tick presence after returning inside.
