I agree that the increased sleep is just a symptom. Likely it and the lower brain volumes are a result of longterm inflammation in the brain.

Sleep is when your brain has an opportunity to detox itself. If there is inflammation there is more to detox and could increase your need for it. Sleep is also when you are in the highest healing state. When we are sick we naturally feel more sleepy to allow our bodies to recover.
