Hello My fellow steemians.

A healthy attitude is contagious but don't wait to catch it from others. Be a carrier.
-Tom Stoppard

I have been in steemit for a while now and I follow the health and science topics on a regular basis. I have made an small initiative to increase and spread the knowledge of health among steemit members and also increase the interactions in the health topics..

From today onward I will be giving a health topic in my post in a question form and all you need to do is just share your knowledge and experience regarding this topic in the comment section. Some of the good comments will receive the rewards, the comments containing the personal experiences regarding the topic will be highly appriciated. And after 4 days of that post I will be posting detailed health information of that topic, and also add some of the responses from the comment section(from the Question post)

For example- I will be posting a Question Post having the topic "Do you know about the depression?". Then you will have to share your knowledge about it, if you have personal experience about this disease or any of your family members or friends had this condition you can share what it feels like being depressed or what it feels like seeing other depressed. You can also add suggestions for the people who have this condition.
Then I will be choosing some good responses from the comment section and these will be rewarded. Then, after 4 days of that Question post "Do you know about the depression?" I will be posting detailed health information about depression
containing its causes, symptoms and the prevention/treatments on my subsequent posts, and i will also add some of the responses from the comment section(from the Question post) in my post.

Rewards
1st- 30% of the SBD generated from Question Post and a randowhale vote in your comment
2nd-25% of SBD generated from Question Post + a randowhale vote in your comment
3rd- 20% of SBD generated from Question Post + a randowhale vote in your comment

You can also make Health awareness post on your own like this one if you have some health knowledge and let it spread throughout the steemit community.

Today's topic is-

Excellent topic today, when I am studying mental disorders I like to first look at the timeline, so my first criteria if I am looking over a patient case study or exam question, is the time. Is it over 6 months? Once that criteria is met, then I look for the patient having 3 or more symptoms over that 6 month period. Typically I look for positive symptoms and a negative symptom coexisting together and try to distinguish it from Delusional disorder or Personality disorder. I have interacted with a couple patients while visiting a mental hospital, I generally get along with those folks, I try to give them a listening ear, I have one friend who is along the line but haven't been diagnosed but developed those symptoms abruptly, very sad case, in the Caribbean we tend to think of those things as evil spirits invading the body, I honestly can't say no to those beliefs but some cases I feel like its the hands of evil doers. I notice that it is one of those disorders that is also heavily associated with drug abuse especially marijuana while talking to few of the staff of the mental hospital but if you ask me, a few of these guys just have unique beliefs and nothing is really wrong with them. I have also come across more male patients than females, an most of the males broke when life crisis hit home

Thanks @daudimitch for your response... you have nicely described how a physician would see a patient of schizophrenia..and yes there are some disbeliefs about this disorder in the community which should be cleared...

I will answer your question but first let me share a somewhat personal story.

I have an older cousin with Schizophrenia. He used to have a good-paying, not really demanding job in the public sector. He is an only child and lived with his parents his whole life until the day they died. I should mention that when he was young (according to my family members) he was really good looking and smart, with an IQ of at least 140, he got tested in school and he was the top student. To outsiders he appeared to be just an ordinary person, just slightly weird.

He had his first major Schizophrenia episode at the age of around 30. He disappeared and was found many days later naked in a mountain, in an animal-like state. He was taken to a psychiatric clinic, got electrotherapy (don't know the exact name sorry) and put on drugs for the first time in his life. Later, he claimed that he was looking for his alien parents and he missed the alien spaceship that would take him to them for seconds. He was released from the clinic and he lived a somewhat normal and productive life until about the age of 50ish, when both his parents died.

They left him with a huge heritage, over 1.000.000 dollars in bank accounts and 3 houses. As I mentioned before, he also had a nice govermental job. So he had a lot of money. But no real friends, no close relatives, no nothing to keep an eye on him. We guess he stopped taking his meds at some point and all went downhill.

5 year fast forward, he had no money, and had sold 2 out of the three houses. And all his credit cards were red. Where did he spend all that money? Women? Travelling? Gambling? No! It's somewhat funny. He spend all that money buying kid toys, books, movie dvds, computers, hunting &survival tools, useless gadgets, anything you can imagine! Thousands of them! And you know the strange part? He didn't even unbox them. We were warned by his workplace that he had gone missing for months and we discovered all these stuff in their boxes, unsealed!

The good thing is that we managed to somehow get him back on track and payed all his cards. Now he lives near us and he has a nice pension.. But no real friends, no people to talk (other than us), no wife, no kids no nothing.

He was good looking. He was smart. His parents were super rich and left him a huge fortune. More than what most people need to be happy. He could have everything he wanted with very little effort. But instead, he will die alone with no real friends, spending his last two decades of his life miserable, maybe thinking of how he f***** everything up. Perhaps still haunted by his demons, despite the meds he is taking...

So.. What do I know about Schizophrenia? I know it sucks

Thanks @trumpman for sharing your experience ..

I won't give you an answer in a scientific way, I will give you an answer of a more artistic approach:

When suddenly all your darkest selves come to life and start messing with your mind until you lose your real, sane self.

Upvoted and resteemed.

Thats a great art, if it is your original, it will be featured in the post where the result will be announced...

It is an incurable disease .
Some people, with the help of treatment and psychotherapy, can stabilize, others are less sensitive and will continue to have hallucinations ...

Thanks @drphysiatre for the response...you have shortly and sweetly described the topic..

I was just getting ready to write a long comment on depression until i kept reading. I know very little about schizophrenia but its a great way to raise awareness and i look forward to your post on it.

I would love to see your post on depression in steemit, its a major health disorder these days , and it is increasing its scale day by day...I had earlier posted on depression, you can check here if you like ..and thank you very much..I will let you know when I post about schizophrenia..

What I know about Schizophrenia is that its a severe mental condition that affects the behavior of person and this is the most worst case of all mental illness. I never encountered any person with this condition I only seen on movies and news. I heard from others that this is also hereditary although it can be true but in my opinion everyone could have this type of mental illness because every mental condition started in depression and if it can't be cured as early as possible it may lead to a more severe case like Schizophrenia.

Thanks for your response @adrianmendoza..you have good understanding of this disease..

yes @himal nowadays people must be aware of this kind of disease

Its hereditary but I guess till now no gene's which are conclusively linked are found yet.

well.. somehow I also believe its hereditary but you know everything is possible now even if its hereditary or not.

Under generic circumstances anyone can be considered schizophrenic.

"Schizophrenia is a chronic and severe mental disorder that affects how a person thinks, feels, and behaves. People with schizophrenia may seem like they have lost touch with reality. Although schizophrenia is not as common as other mental disorders, the symptoms can be very disabling."

Basically everyone at point in their life and in some degree.

Thanks @kyriacos for your response....you have described almost everything in a condensed form...

I went through some patients file last week in the psychiatric department and found a case of Schizophrenia. The patients came with the symptoms of Delusion and disorganized speech which was hard to differentiate with the anxiety depression. He was playing with the words and no one understood, he created a word mismatch there right in place . He even had a disorganized speech and these symptoms carried for around 6-7 months
After this I came to know that these patients have a split mind because he cannot differentiate the reality and the fake . After some study I came to know that it was gameplay in the Neurotransmitter in the brain by serotonin, GABA and Nor-epinephrine. But somehow , the psychiatrist managed with the anti-psychotic drugs and the symptoms preety much releaved .
Hope you post soon about the schizophrenia cause I am too much eagerly waiting for this knowledge

Hey, thanks for your response @khatisam4 ....you had had a great experience with the schizophrenic patients...

Nice to see some more of medicine posts here on steemit...great initiative.

Thank you ..hope thsese types of posts and contents grow on steemit...

Great initiative, I hope we all learn a little more about the importance of Health.

Yeah , that is what we are intending to do..stay in touch..thanks..

Schizophrenia seems to be caused by disordered nmda receptor activation. From a lack of co-agonists d-serine and glycine. Major breakthroughs in treatment have been provided by sarcosine aka n-methylglycine which is a reverse agonist at the nmda receptor glycine site(so named because they hadn't known d-serine was a molecule with higher specificity). Sarcosine however must be dosed repeatedly throughout the day so as to be effective and therefore extended release formulations have been devised. The name of which currently escapes me.

Thanks @drabs for the response..nicely explained the pathophysiology & t/t

Certaintly not the only pathophysiological occurances in schizophrenia though nor the best treatment of the underlying pathology: excess production of quinolinic acid(an nmda agonist) during the production of niacin, worsening of symptoms by lack of magnesium known to block nmda channels. Again worsened by zinc deficiency which also blocks nmda activity. That pyroluria(not generally accepted by mainstream medicine however it most certainly seems to be occuring), a condition whereby both zinc and b6 are excreted bound to an altered heme metabolite; perhaps a bodily mechanism to prevent ordered thinking and excess energy metabolism(oxidation) during times of specific nutrient inavailabilities. A condition which is likely involved with schizophrenia. If we followed old patterns it would be unlikely we try that new food or consider that food we tried many months ago as a means of recovery/necessity. In many cultures mysticism was an ability to form connections and understand concepts which were generally overlooked by the community. The learning of which governed by nmda activity and d-aspartate among many other factors modulating nmda activity. The "biology of kundalini" begins to speak upon the biological mechanisms which govern schizophrenia and mysticism, the former being those who are further lacking in nutrient availability.

Well , the story began when I was a higher secondary school student ( called +2 in Nepal ).One friend of mine recommended a movie entitled "A beautiful mind ".Frankly speaking after watching it for first time i could not understand the movie. The only thing i came to know was The Actor(Russel Crowe) was suffering from a disease called Schizophrenia. It was the first time i knew the name .I google it. And then i decided to watch the movie for the second time.I was so much inspired by this movie that I decided to make medicine as a career. This movie and the disease Schizophrenia has made a blueprint in my mind.

Being a medical student i was posted in Psychiatric ward. It was first time that i saw a schizophrenic patient. She was a known case of Schizophrenia for 6 years and was taking medication.Later that night i was told by a resident doctor that she has a history of three consecutive miscarriage. She don't have any child but she behaves like she has 7 year old son with whom she can talk and play . In medical term we call it as audio-visual hallucination. Auditory hallucination are more common in schizophrenia. She thinks that every family members are against her child ( we call it as delusion of persecution).
The next day i closely observed the patient. She was obviously not in touch with reality. She looked like a stupor with decreased self care and poor grooming. There was poor verbal and non verbal communication . Of course there was no eye contact at all with poor social interaction. There was proper thought blocking ( patient interrupt before thought is completed). There was no any suicidal thought ( it is very rare in schizophrenia but may be associated with depressive symptoms).

She is undergoing treatment. She is showing some sign of improvement. We all hope she would be normal again.
Once i read in our textbook that

Schizophrenia is arguably the worst disease affecting mankind, even AIDS not expected.

At Last,

Thanks @himal for the contest and most importantly initiating health awareness in steemit.

Thanks @alpharay for your great response .... your story alone is very inspiring that you chose medicine as the career after watching the "Beautiful mind"..
