It may be hard to say the main function, but it seems to have rods and cones like an eyeball, can create or receive visuals, and seems to influence one's ability to dream, meditate, and or engage in the spiritual realms, some say.
It is interesting that is looks like a pinecone and it is symbolized by the pinecone while the Vatican has a huge pinecone statue. Very interesting. May we continue to understand it more and more.
