Importance of having a Home Kit for First Aid
It is very common that many people do not know what it is or do not give importance to having a basic first aid kit in their home. And it is an issue that is very simple and in turn very important to prevent a small event from becoming a more complex situation.
As some people say, "It is better to have a medicine cabinet and not need it, than to need it and not have it".
Because it is better to be prepared and protect our near ones from some accident or eventuality, I will tell you as I have researched what a first aid kit should be for the home.
It is very common that in the day to day of any home different events occur like a fall, a blow or a burn, which can threaten our well-being and that of our family. And it is clear that these accidents can not be foreseen, but we can treat them from home when they are not more serious. To be prepared, these items should contain a home first aid kit:
Ideal items for a home first aid kit:
Scissors: to cut gauze, tape, clothing or any item.
Gauzes and bandages: to stop bleeding or clean wounds.
Band aids: to cover wounds of a small accident.
Plaster: to fasten and fix bandages.
Tweezers: To hold gauze and bandages without contaminate them.
Latex gloves: It helps to avoid infections when having contact with the affected person.
Alcohol: to disinfect wounds and wash implements.
Thermometer: To take the temperature of the injured
Acetaminophen: To counteract pain.
Soap: It serves to disinfect and sanitize the wounds caused by an accident.
Oral Serum: To treat a person with symptoms of dehydration.
Flashlight: For better visibility when examining an injured person in low light conditions.
A first aid manual: To know how to act in case of an emergency.
Suggestions
Have in the medicine cabinet a list with emergency telephone numbers, in case the situation is complicated (emergencies, firemen, police, etc.).
Adults living at home should know how to act in an emergency situation, so it is important to talk with them and guide them on how to handle this event with speed and tranquility.
If a person with a chronic illness lives in your home, you can also include his/her medications and instructions to care for that person in case of a crisis of illness.
Do not leave the first aid kit within easy reach of children. This must be located in a place where only adults can access it.
Periodically look at the expiration date of the drugs, and change them when they expire.
Never forget that self-medication is a very dangerous practice. It is appropriate to contact health professionals to solve the inconvenience at home.
