How to cure hiccups

in #health6 years ago

So I figure, if you're reading this, chances are you're having the hiccups? When searching the Internet you'll find a ton of information and ways to get over it. But they're all a bit too complicated in my opinion.

Drinking some water from the other end of the glass is one of the methods. Another one is to have someone scare the hiccups out of you. Good news: You can do it yourself! Breathing. You're already doing it. High five, you're still alive! But first release yourself from those horrible hiccups, follow this pattern:

Breathing pattern 1-4-2

Breathe in for 1 count. Hold your breath for 4 counts. Breathe out for 2 counts.
Repeat 5 to 10 times.

A few notes:
I am not giving medical advice. If you are experiencing serious health issues, see your doctor. Hiccups are brief and involuntary contractions of the diaphragm muscle. This could have serious causes, so if the hiccups persist, again visit a health professional. If you have breathing issues, this breathing pattern might not be for you.

The duration of the pattern can be adjusted to whatever feels right. However, do respect the rhythm. You could decide to breathe in for 3 counts, hold your breath for 12 counts and breathe out for 6 counts, Remember though, this is not a competition. A healthy person takes about 12 breathes a minute. Just so you know!

I recommend breathing in through your nose and out through your mouth. But in general you'll survive as long as you keep breathing.

The goal of this pattern is to oxygenate your blood and it might help to ease your mind. I have been doing breathing exercises to calm my mind in the past and by accident I discovered this amazing hiccups fix. Ever since I have only shared it with a few friends. It worked every single time.

Tried it? How did it work for you?
