Happy afternoon friends of steemit, today a health issue that may interest us. Women can suffer from many diseases of our gender, there is also another disease that is related to our internal organs and is hernia in hiatus, but what is the hernia in hiatus in women ?.

Hiatal hernia, is a condition in which a portion of the stomach protrudes into the chest, through a hole that is located in the diaphragm, the muscle layer that separates the thorax from the abdomen and used in breathing.

The esophageal hiatus is a natural orifice located in the diaphragm, the main muscle of respiration, in addition to separating the thoracic cavity from the abdomen. Through this hole the esophagus passes and when the muscle weakens and it widens, part of the stomach can pass into the thorax, which causes a hiatus hernia.

Up to 20% of the population may suffer hiatus hernia, although the vast majority will not experience symptoms. It is more common in women and although it can appear at any age, it is more frequent after the age of 50. Among the factors that contribute to the appearance of a hiatus hernia are obesity, age, consumption of tobacco and alcohol and those situations that increase abdominal pressure (efforts, chronic bronchitis, bulimia, pregnancy).

In most cases, a small hiatus hernia does not cause symptoms and does not need treatment, so many patients never know that they have a hiatus hernia or are diagnosed by chance when performing some control for another disease.

If symptoms appear, there is no difference between men and women, and they are usually due to the presence of gastroesophageal reflux (rising of the acid content from the stomach to the esophagus and mouth) causing burning or burning, abdominal or chest pain, regurgitations , chronic cough, dysphonia and even dysphagia (difficulty swallowing food) in the most serious cases. Not treating this condition can cause damage to the esophagus, such as esophagitis (inflammation or irritation) and, in some cases, trigger what is called Barrett's esophagus, which is a potentially carcinogenic lesion. In other cases, the presence of a hernia can cause food intolerance, vomiting and / or severe pain if its content (the stomach) is trapped in the hernia, and in the worst case, it is strangulated, a situation that requires urgent surgical intervention. Although it is rare, vomiting with blood or dark stools may also occur, which may indicate a gastrointestinal hemorrhage.
