Jesus in the Gospel of Saint Matthew taught about the importance of mercy (compassion, kindness, gentleness) with a beautiful fantastic story, the parable of the ungrateful servant. With this parable Jesus introduced his listeners and disciples to a very important spiritual concept in the Kingdom of Heaven, the dominion or empire of God's perfections; if we forget about our neighbor, God will forget about us, if we give mercy we will receive mercy. That is why Jesus summarized the duties of man with a simple phrase: "Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful" Luke 6:36.
With all this Jesus anticipated the importance of communion, of the correct social order of society, a society where forgiveness and mercy are not constantly exercised is a society of heretics and criminals.
In this way, Lord Jesus began the teaching of the parable of the ungrateful servant:
"Therefore, the kingdom of heaven is like a king who wanted to settle accounts with his servants. As he began the settlement, a man who owed him ten thousand bags of gold was brought to him. Since he was not able to pay, the master ordered that he and his wife and his children and all that he had be sold to repay the debt.
At this the servant fell on his knees before him. ´Be patient with me,´ he begged, ´and I will pay back everything.´ The servant's master took pity on him, canceled the debt and let him go" Matthew 18:23-27.
But then the Bible tells us that this servant was actually a "small greedy", and so this "small greedy" found himself with one of his debtors, and since he could not pay him, he put him in prison until he returned all the money.
And Jesus, to finish the parable, explained that when the King found out about this situation, he ordered his debtor to be imprisoned until he paid all the debt; and with this idea, Jesus concluded his teaching: "This is how my heavenly Father will treat each of you unless you forgive your brother or sister from your heart" Matthew 18:35.
