"Religion must take care of us rather than sin, but how many sins people commit in the name of that religion - (R.A Kartini)."

HISTORY

Raden Adjeng Kartini or more commonly known as R. A. Kartini is one of the National Heroes of Indonesia. He was known as the pioneer of emancipation of native women at the time.

The woman who was born in Jepara, 21 April 1879 comes from a Javanese priyayi or noble family. She is the daughter of Raden Mas Adipati Ario Sosroningrat and M. A. Ngasirah. The mother is the first wife but not the main one.

At that time, the father was a Wedana (head of the administrative area between the district and the district). There is a policy of the Dutch government, if you want to be a regent, then Kartini's father should marry the offspring prijaji as well.

While M. A. Ngasirah is just an ordinary person. His mother Kartini is a child of Nyai Haji Siti Aminah and Kyai Haji Madirono, who is a religious teacher in Telukawur, Jepara. While the father is still in the Hamengkubuwono VI lineage.

Because of the family situation like that, Kartini's father decided to marry again with Raden Adjeng Woerjan who is a direct descendant of the King of Madura. Kartini is the fifth child of 11 siblings consisting of her siblings and half siblings.

Kartini is different from girls in her village. He got a good school chance. Kartini studied at ELS (Europese Lagere School) until she was 12 years old. After that, he was at home. Because at that time there was a tradition of Javanese women should stay home and dipingit.

During school at ELS, Kartini learned Dutch. Because of the Dutch language, at home Kartini still study and send letters to friends correspondence from the Netherlands one of Rosa Abendanon and Estelle "Stella" Zeehandelaar. In fact, several times the writing of Kartini published in De Hollandsche magazine Lelie.

From various books, magazines, and European newspapers, Kartini began to be interested in the way of thinking European women are more free and advanced than the native women at the time. From there arises his desire to promote the indigenous women who are considered still have a low social level.

Because of his condition dipingit, not many activities that can be done Kartini outside the home. However, that does not mean he is silent. Kartini's correspondence activity became his weapon of struggle. The letters he wrote contain more complaints about the life of indigenous women, especially Javanese who are difficult to move forward.

One of them as a woman's habits should be dipingit, not free to study knowledge, and also customs that curb the freedom of women. Kartini wants emancipation, a woman must gain freedom and equality both in life and in law.

Kartini also raised religious issues such as polygamy and the reason why the scriptures should be memorized and read but not necessarily understood. In fact, there is a quote from Kartini that says, "Religion must take care of us rather than sin, but how many sins people commit in the name of that religion."

Kartini reasoning power matures. When he turned 20, Kartini read books by Louis Coperus (De Stille Kraacht), Van Eeden, Augusta de Witt, Multatuli (Max Havelaar and Love Letters) and various feminist romances. Everything is in Dutch.

Living in Jepara makes Kartini feel less developed. With facilities owned by the family, he also wanted to continue school to Jakarta or to the Netherlands. But her parents did not allow her even if she did not forbid her to become a teacher.

Kartini was discouraged and still live his life in Jepara. At the age of 24, he asked his parents to marry. Kartini agreed and married K. R. M. Adipati Ario Singgih Djojo Adhiningrat, November 12, 1903. Her husband is the Rembang Regent who has 3 wives.

Although already a wife, Kartini still eager to become a teacher and founded the school. Kartini's wishes were welcomed by her husband. Kartini gained her freedom and was supported to establish a women's school in the east of the gate of the Rembang Regency office complex.

A year of marriage, Kartini was blessed with a boy named Soesalit Djojoadhiningrat who was born on September 13, 1904. However, four days after giving birth, death picked her up. Kartini died on September 17, 1904 at the age of 25 years. He is buried in Bulu Village, Rembang District, Central Java.

Despite his death, Kartini's struggle through his letters has significance for the position of Indonesian women. One of them, the book "" Dalaman Terbaplah Terbitlah Bright ".

Thanks to its services, R. A. Kartini established as one of the National Hero of Indonesia in the era of Sukarno administration with the legal basis of Presidential Decree 108 of 1964 which is set on May 2, 1964 and set April 21 as the Day of Kartini
