The Ewe lived to the east of the Volta. They claim to have originated in Yorubaland, and to have moved to Ketu, bow in Dahomey, which was then part of the Yoruba state. From here they moved to Notsie, a town some fifty miles inland in what is today Togo.
After a time of peace, the Ewe at Notsie seperated and moved away because of the harsh rule of their king, Agokoli. This man is remembered in Ewe tradition as a very wicked King.

But they could no longer bear Agokoli's harsh rule, the majority of the people left him. One party, led by Amega Wenya, founded a new Kingdom around Keta Lagoon. Most of these people became fishermen and often fought with their neighbours, the Ada, over fishing rights.
Another group of the Ewe went inland and settled in the upper part of the present-day Volta Region. Yet a third group settled near the Volta, where they met with the Nkonya people and drove them up-country.
Because they were the latest arrivals among the Ewe, they were called Peki, which means late-comers.
