This is so exciting and interesting - I can't help but wonder why Houdini didn't see through the charade? Since he was so keen on uncovering fraud...how was he so taken by this lady?
I had never heard of this story before, thank you, it's lovely. Well, maybe not lovely, but terribly interesting. To think that such people existed...monstrous and yet fascinating.

Lifelong compulsive liars can be really good at their craft! Plus she was so embedded in high society at that point that it would have taken a whole lot of untangling to realize that she was an imposter. She was an orphan and her husband and son were dead so it's not like there was anyone there to refute her supposed background.
