"In March of 1768, Colonel Joseph Chapline executed a deed to the Mount Calvary Lutheran Church Vestrymen for a church and burial ground at this site. The was to be on peppercorn yearly. This graveyard is the oldest in the town of Sharpsburg. Some headstones date to 1774."
The cost of one peppercorn is an old way of saying: cheap rent. This cemetery is located next to Antietam National Cemetery.

The print style on this stone alone looks very old. This headstone is a different color compared to all the other stones at this site. Again, always tired lightly when walking on top of the dead.
