Trincomalee Dutch Fort (Fort frederick) - sri lanka

Trincomalee Fort is an ancient fort built by the Portuguese, Dutch that is located in Trincomalee, Eastern Province in Sri Lanka. The fort was constructed and saw its first use in the year 1623, and it was built using primarily granite and rock for its walls and foundation. The fort is still operational as it stands today.

Trincomalee Fort, or Fort Frederick as it’s more commonly known to locals, is open to the public for tours and visits. It remains one of the most gorgeous, historical landmarks in the Eastern Province of Sri Lanka and makes for both an educational and picturesque visit for vacationers.

The fort is open to the public from 6:00 AM until 10:00 PM daily.

Contrary to popular belief, Fort Fredrick, much like other historical landmarks in the country, is controlled by the Sri Lankan government.

The fort was renamed to Fort frederick in the year 1665 by the Dutch as the previous fortress, a fort by the name of The Fort of Triquillimale, was destroyed and dismantled. In 1639, the fort was captured and taken control of by a Dutch fleet under the control of Commander Admiral Westerworld.

While the fort has begun to show some exterior wear due to the elements and its extended age, it remains a beautiful, nearly one of a kind landmark and an outstanding destination for curious tourists  in the Eastern Province of Sri Lanka.

The fort’s natural beauty and lush greens surrounding it make for outstanding photography opportunities, and its history is immensely interesting for those in search of a trip back in time.
