Rare picture: the Europeans escaping to Aleppo

For centuries, Aleppo was one of the biggest cities and most popular not only in the region. 


 Was the city's third-largest of the Ottoman Empire and the largest city in Syria.

Aleppo today is a symbol of war and suffering.

Thousands of people have fled from there seeking refuge in Europe.

But while the movement of immigrants has provoked strong crisis in European politics, Spiegel brings some rare pictures, which show that before 72 years was different.

Europeans at that time were fleeing toward Aleppo and Damascus.

Tens of thousands of people fleeing the conflict largest in history, World War II, to live close to Aleppo.

A network organized by 44 countries bringing aid to all refugees.

Most of the refugees were Polish, Greek, Yugoslav, etc.

In refugee camps they were opened up schools and workshops
