Mythical History: The Untold Story About Dragons

in #history6 years ago (edited)

Some myth might be a historical past that might never reoccur, but not quite sure if it would be in the case of some creatures that were deemed to be beasts of power. The intensity of these creatures of old draws my attention each time I watch any fiction movie that involves them. One among many is the dragon, filled with strength, described as a monster, reptile, beast or even a serpent.

This creatures unique characteristics in the form of different existing creatures are known all around the world in a different culture for its existence and adventure. Could it be true they existed?

Sometimes I think of the existence of this creature as if they exist in our current generation. assuming they were controlled by humans, if it was living among nations, if it was giving the right to exist but pause a while…in the hearts of humans, it is called the devil.

Dragons are thought to have some certain features which include breathing of fire, wings, claws, and scales. As they are in different types, some are said to have horns, two heads, and venomous in nature. Their feeding attributes are not left out as they tend to feed on birds, humans, snakes, rats and even bats. Furthermore, the locomotive aspect of this mythical creature is quite interesting as some have had two, four or several numbers of legs.

Brainy Dragons

Animals have brains and are good at exhibiting qualities of knowledge around humans. The dragon is not exempted in this brainy attribute. The dragon is one intelligent creature. They are very selective when it comes to their “apartment” you might say that I use the word "apartment", but yes it does. Just like when we want to get a place for living, we have to examine the environment, building, and others. The dragons do that too. They live far away from humans as they live in dark places, caves, and damped places.

The dragon was at first thought to live in the water and later tagged to be creatures of fire, however, the sea serpent might have been the first existing dragon and might be the reason why they were tagged with this specialty.
Most stories about dragons characterize dragons as deadly and individuals or ruler has to protect their country from them while others characterize them to be protective. Inasmuch as they are seen from this angle, stories are told from different cultures and tribes regarding the role they play in their past history.

Our knowledge of dragons cannot be specific because different cultures seem to have their own type of dragon as dragons cannot be seen from one perspective. Some culture believes that dragons existed right from when the earth began, others believe that dragons could have existed in the time of the dinosaurs while others say that they saw dragons and humans defeated the dragons.

The attention from these magical creatures that capture the heart of many for over thousands of years has never been forgotten as the imaginations of this creature always twinkle the heart of humans to draw and make like-minded sculptures and pictures of this wonderful creature.

HISTORY AND STORIES ABOUT DRAGONS

The certainty of appearance on earth is not very clear to humans, however, the traces of their existence is traced back 4000 B.C. it was said that they were able to live anywhere. The story of dragons is explained in different categories between cultures. Some stories told, said that dragons lived in Antarctica even though lives don’t exist there. In that like, it was assumed that they lived there despite the climatic status of the region.

In the time of Cristopher Columbus, the sea monster was feared greatly. This time was the time when the thought of the earth being flat was in the heart of humans. The story was that the dragon was staying at the edge of the earth waiting in place for anyone who dared to go to the other side of the earth, beyond the ocean. Maps were made, locating the area where they lived. It was told around the world of the danger of visiting that location.
Further stories tell us they existed back in the time of the gods when a queen wanted to sacrifice her daughter to a dragon until Perseus intervened.
The fairy tale myth was not excluded when it comes to the reign of dragons. It was said that the dragon was a keeper of precious treasures which is either, a jewel, gold or a maiden. For it to be retained or taken, a knight would have to fight for it by killing the dragon. As the name dragon implies, gotten from the Greek word “draconta” which means “to watch”

Stories never stop when it comes to the dragon as it was told of a story that started in the middle east of a man whose name was st. George who part of the Christian legends to destroy dragons in form of demons back 1,700 years ago. He lived from about 275-303 A.D. St. Georges fathers homeland was Cappadocia. St. George decided to follow his father’s trail in becoming a soldier. The ambitioned young man grew in reputation and ranks and became a part of the personal guard to the Roman Emperor Diocletian. The story of St. George took place in Libya. It was about the rescue of a princess from a dragon.

Once every year, a maiden or sheep is meant to be offered as a sacrifice to this dragon. The medians have to cast a lot to see who would be the scapegoat. It came to pass, the lot fell on the princess of silene. The king offered everything he had to the people so that he could save the life of his daughter but they refused because they feared the wrath of the dragon.

The princess was sent out to the lake and was dressed as a bride in wait for the dragon to arrive. When St. George heard about it, he rode with his horse to the lake. There, the princess saw him, she tried to send him away but he refused and decided to fight for the life of the princess.

As they were still talking, the dragon came out of the lake then, St. George moved forward and attacked the dragon with his lance. He then called the princess to throw her girdle to him which he put around the neck of the dragon. As she did so, the dragon followed the princess as they ran back to the town. When the people saw the dragon, they ran away but St. George told the people that if they would be converted to Christians and be baptize, then he will kill the dragon in front of them.

About 15,000 men and women including the children agreed and were baptized. Before them, St. George drew out his sword and did justice to the dragon. The king then built a church in the area where the dragon was killed which then sprang up waters that can heal diseases. This heroic story has encompassed for centuries.

Another story is coming from the regions of Norway, it was said that a king went for a long trip leaving his daughter in the castle. He left her in the hands of a tiny dragon to be her protector. The princess had fears that this tiny dragon was not capable of protecting her until when the dragon grew to become a large monster. The dragon became so big to the point it controlled the castle. It won’t let anyone come and go from the castle even the king. As the king was not permitted into the castle when he arrived, he decided that the only option was to kill the dragon. He made a decree that whosoever kill the dragon would marry his daughter. In Norway, no man was capable of killing the beast but a man from Sweden came up and finally killed the dragon.

Stories upon stories never end when it comes to the tale of the dragons. A story which involves a young man Tristan who was tricked. Tristan was sent by his master to kill a dragon in order to bring a kings daughter to him. Unknowingly, Tristan was tricked by another man who wanted to marry the princess after he has killed the dragon. However, the truth was uncovered when Tristan showed the tongue of the dragon to show that he was the one who killed the dragon.

In time past it was said that anyone who killed a dragon would be awarded a knighthood in England. In Rome, dragons are termed to hold the uncovered mysteries of the earth. They were looked upon as the source of knowledge and was used as a symbol to represent their military banners. Two dragons were used as a symbol. One represents heroism and protection while the other was fearsome and used as a threat.

Dragons Extinct

The extinction of dragons is something that scientist and experts have been trying to uncover but they could not arrive at a conclusion of what really made these creatures go extinct.
Some expert believes the reason for extinction was that their lairs which are their hidden abode were destroyed by humans due to the expansion of cities and buildings that were built. Because of this reason, the dragon started drifting away towards remote areas where they could not find their favorite food. They believed that the salty sea air made plants that dragons feed on to die quickly.

And this caused the ill health to the dragons. When they could not eat properly, their camouflage fade slowly. The color that changed in them made them visible to the dragon slayers which then led to their extinction.
Some believed that their extinct was because of a dragon king they were absorbed by Tiber Septim who ascended to the more powerful realm as a god.

The funniest was that some said that whenever the dragons saw the flag of St. George, then the dragons become afraid..hmmm

Basic characteristics

Dragons are of different in size. When they are hatched newly their size approximate around 1-4 feet long and its half is in diameter, although the eggs laid by the dragon vary. A full grown-up dragon’s wing can span up to 170 feet and its height could be approximately 85 feet.
The color of the white in the dragon’s eye is not white just like humans are. They often have colors like yellow, green, silver, red, gold and orange. The dragon has a leathery outer eyelid and smooth three eyelids that is located inside. The inner eyelid protects the eyes from sudden bright light flash.
The egg of a dragon is hard with stony shells and ovoid shape. When a dragon is hatched, the scales are like tissue paper. As time goes on, the shells become hard.
