Whole Lotta Zeppelin

in Guitar5 years ago

I missed he whole Led Zeppelin thing growing up. Back in the 80's when I was a lot younger than I am now there was this whole thing about rock music and evil. I don't buy into this any more than stories of the Easter bunny or Santa Clause, but I do remember people talking about the song Stairway to Heaven and this thing called back masking. Google it! People actually believe in this, and not just your average nut cases, a lot of seemingly normal people too! Each to their own I guess, but this is possibly why I steered clear of Led Zeppelin. It may have also had something to do with Robert Plant's voice. Probably not the work of the devil, but can be a tad winey. Even if you did buy into the whole "satanic panic" thing you would have at least heard these riffs as I did.

When everyone was in the office I used to walk around the streets at lunch time with a work colleague who was a huge Zeppelin and Jimmy Page fan. We'd have many conversations trying to convince each other why Jimmy was a better guitarist than Stevie Ray Vaughan or the other way around. I had no idea how prolific and influential Jimmy was and how he played on so many different albums in the UK, also how he was a producer as well.

I always thought that Jimmy's guitar of choice was a Gibson ,but apparently a lot of his classic riffs were recorded on a Telecaster. However at the moment (until Tuesday) I have the Les Paul from the guitar library so here they are, possibly my 5 favourite Jimmy Page riffs.

Stay safe people!

Good times! And bad times ;) I do love Led Zep. Page came up with so many great riff across a range of styles.

Have you read Hammer of the Gods? It details some of the things the band got up to. Page has had an obsession with black magic, but I don't believe in that stuff. Some people go crazy when they suddenly get loads of money and adulation.

There has been a lot of crap talked about people killing themselves because of music, but how many have be saved by it? Who listens to records backwards anyway? Was hard to do in the days of vinyl.

The guy from work I was talking about in the post recommended that book but I haven't got around to reading it yet, but will check it out soon.

I remember back in the day pulling apart a cassette recording of Queen's Another one bites the dust and swapping the spindles over so it would play backwards. We were trying to hear the words "It's fun to smoke marijuana". Needless to say we did not hear that, but it was fun trying.

I never was a (big) Zeppeling fan but they do have some nice, catchy and iconic riffs which you can't get out of your head easily after you've heard them. (thanks for that haha). Great play.

And awesome arcade machine in the background btw

Same, the riffs are great and really catchy, but I can take or leave a whole song.
The arcade machine was a fun project a while back. I made the cabinet, the screen is an old Dell monitor and the games are played on a raspberry pi (https://retropie.org.uk/). The fun was in the making, but it doesn't get used that often.
