Here are my photos for this week.

Can you believe that this is a moth and not a flower beetle? It is the Ailanthus Webworm Moth (Atteva aurea) and are members of the Ermine Moth family. When resting like this one, it tucks and rolls it wings close to its body. These moths are originally from southern Florida and some move up north here during the summer. We have the Ailanthus Tree which is also called the Tree of Heaven, and these moths have found it to be a suitable host tree for their caterpillars.

Their orange and black colors of the adults tell their predators that they are toxic and don't taste good. These moths can be found during the day sipping nectar from a variety of flowers and are good pollinators. I found this one on the catmint plant. They are also attracted to lights at night.

I also found this skipper butterfly on the same plant. It is from the Duskywing family and the species are difficult to identify. I think it may be the Wild Indigo Duskywing because they like mint plants. The markings on this skipper look like it could also be the Horace's Duskywing.

Thanks for stopping by!

All photos are my own.
