In Cuba, being a doctor is more than a profession. It is a commitment to humanity.
A Legacy of Medical Internationalism
Since the 1960s, Cuba has sent medical brigades to every corner of the world. Over 400,000 health workers have served in 164 countries. The Henry Reeve Brigade, created in 2005, specializes in disaster response and fighting epidemics. They have battled Ebola in Africa, cholera in Haiti, and COVID-19 in Italy, Latin America, and beyond.
Education for the World
The Latin American School of Medicine (ELAM) has trained over 35,000 doctors from more than 100 countries, free of charge. Many come from poor communities and return home to serve where they are needed most.
Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
This photo shows an Expoferia de Medicina Física y Rehabilitación in Cuba. It reflects the dedication of Cuban rehab professionals who help patients recover from injuries, strokes, and chronic pain. Their work restores independence and dignity.
Facing Challenges with Resilience
Cuban doctors work under difficult conditions: the US embargo, shortages of supplies, and low pay. Yet they continue to serve with passion and creativity. They are a symbol of resistance and hope.
Why It Matters
Cuban doctors prove that health is a human right, not a luxury. They show that solidarity can overcome scarcity. Their legacy is not measured in money, but in lives saved.
To all Cuban health workers: thank you for your sacrifice and your heart. 💙
