Pues resulta que salí con mi hijo Julito en mi carro. Ustedes saben que mi carro es de tracción animal. Tengo un caballo alazán con el que salgo a trabajar o a pasear en carro o araña. Hoy salí a recoger al niño de la escuela y luego fuimos a recoger a su mamá que tenía actividad docente cerca del estadio Capitán San Luis.
Estábamos esperando a la parte de afuera de esa institución deportiva conversando de pelota. Julito me estaba diciendo que la pelota es su deporte preferido y su deseo de estar en un equipo de pelota.
De pronto el niño me dijo: papá ahí adentro están jugando pelota yo quiero ver. Yo le dije que no podíamos entrar porque el caballo no se podía quedarse solo y teníamos que esperar a mamá. Me puse a sacarle unas sogas de la boca al animal para que pudiera comer un poco de hierba. Me entretuve un poco y se me perdió de vista mi muchacho. El niño salió a buscar por dónde ver mejor para dentro del estadio.
En efecto estaban jugando dos equipos. Él le preguntó a una persona y le dijo que eran los juegos provinciales. Se enfrentaban el equipo de La Palma y el de la Coloma. El estadio de Pinar del Río tiene por fuera de las cercas un lugar llamado "la lomita" desde allí se ve muy bien el juego sin tener necesidad de entrar al estadío. Está detrás del jardín izquierdo. Muchas pelotas que se botan de jonrón caen en esa zona.
Allí pusieron una tarima de metal con el objetivo de colocar las cámaras de video que transmiten lo que sucede en los jardines. Pues allí se subió mi niño. Cómo es natural no habían cámaras en este momento. Y allí estaba tratando de llevarse todas las impresiones del juego a casa y hasta de intercambiar palabras en algún momento con un pelotero.
En esa zona estuvo ubicada una moderna pizarra electrónica que costó mucho tiempo, esfuerzo y dinero a la Provincia y solo se pudo disfrutar una serie porque el ciclón Ian alzó en peso una torre y arremetió contra ella haciéndola añicos.
Desde allí se ve bien la vieja pizarra analógica, la foto del Capitán San Luis y la bandera cubana ondeando muy bonita. Subido en ese sitio le decía al bateador, espera la tuya, no te apures que te ponchas. Luego a los jardineros les decía cógela, cógela que eso es out. Yo lo miraba de abajo y me sentí muy orgulloso de mi niño, realmente le gusta la pelota.
Cuando empiece el nuevo año se va a unir al equipo de béisbol de la escuela. Así pudimos disfrutar un ratico de la pelota mientras el caballo comía del pasto que ya necesitaba un poco de chapeo.
Se nos ocurrió llamar a un primo de San José de las Lajas en la Provincia de Mayabeque, Cuba, que es pelotero. El muchacho le dió ánimo al niño para que no deje su idea de entrenar este deporte. La semana pasada le mandó por su cumpleaños una pelota, un casco y dos cintos de pelotero. Además quedó en mandarle pantalón, guante, camiseta y un bate que ya tiene en su poder y que pronto llegarán también.
Al parecer voy a tener un pelotero en la casa. Vamos a ver cómo lo podemos ayudar. Eso sí, la madre no cede en eso, tiene que tener buenas notas en la escuela y participar en todas las actividades. Salir con el niño fue divertido pero me puse a pensar en lo rápido que crece y como tenía que ayudarlo para hacerse un hombre de bien. No estaba previsto ver pelota pero allí a las afueras de estadio disfrutamos mucho la tarde padre e hijo. Ya les contaré cómo progresa en el deporte.

We were waiting outside that sports institution talking about baseball. Julito was telling me that baseball is his favorite sport and his desire to be on a baseball team.
