Its a bit of a fuzzy calculation though, as it only focuses on you commuting to work. But if you use public transportation - do you get rid of the car? I suppose not. So actually you are only saving certain elements of your expenses, like the petrol used for commuting, tyre wear and so on. While other elements just stay the same, like insurance and servicing.
And you have to pay AUS$ 55 to keep your license? Thats scandalous! Here in Germany you make your licence once (which is admittedly very expensive, due to the high cost for the driving school) but then you have it for life without further cost.
Yeah, and that reduced $55 fee is if you renew it for ten years at once, after which you need a new licence photo. :) There's no retesting, until you become old and need medical checks to assess your fitness to drive, or if you need glasses as a condition on your licence.
And you are right, it is a fuzzy calculation. So the fixed expenses of ownership like insurance and registration would stay the same, but insurance (at least here) - is based on your kilometres and some insurers give higher risk factors if you're driving to work x number of days a week vs from home, so the cost would probably be higher for that fixed cost.
Where I am living, getting rid of the car would make life a lot more difficult, but it is good to quantify the numbers, even if they're a little bit over the top. I'd rather budget more and spend less, and be left with a surplus in my account I can spend on nice things :)
