Argiope aurantia, a name which means "silver-face, gilded" a reference to the colours on both the cephalothorax and abdomen, respectively, is a common resident of tall weeds and fields of wildflowers. They also like gardens, and are commonly known as garden spiders. This species is found only in North and Central America. A very similar species, A. bruennichi, also called the wasp spider, is found in Russia.

I took photos at different times of day during very different lighting conditions, hoping to capture the details of both the spider and her web (this is a female). For those who are unaware, spiders of this genus can be identified by the prominent zigzag pattern in the centre of the web. If you find a web with this distinct pattern but no spider, follow the silk strands to whatever they are anchored to, and perhaps you will find the spider. Otherwise, you could check back later, and maybe the spider will be back at the centre of the web.

You may have noticed that the left front leg is shorter than it should be, but it's not missing any segments. I have seen this before and even shared pictures of it. When a spider loses a leg, it begins to grow back, but will not reach full size until after several moults.

While I was taking pictures, a small moth flew right into the web. In a span of time a wee bit longer than a literal blink of an eye, the spider darted from the centre of the web to the upper edge, grabbed the moth, and brought it back to the centre to eat.

I would have more pictures of this one, which I encountered while out hunting deer a few days ago, but my iPhone has a tendency to die whenever I use the camera, so I got only two pictures, and I didn't have a container to put the spider in, so I just let her go. Perhaps I'll encounter another of her species eventually, and I'll be able to provide better pictures and a positive identification.

Ahh, such a lovely arachnid! My barn and garden are full of them and I appreciate their insect eating labors all summer long. Not super thrilled with the giant one that I have named Harry who keeps showing up in my bathtub though. That guy is persistent lol!

I knew it! BTW, if "Harry" is as big as the specimens I shared pictures of a few months ago, "he" is definitely female. The males of this species are less than half the size of the females, and I see far fewer of them.
У него на спине нарисован инопланетянен! Если я не ошибаюсь подобные были в фильме "День независимости". Или есть какой-то парродийный фильм.
