Los saltamontes son hexápodos pertenecientes al orden Orthoptera. Comparten una serie de características con otros grupos de insectos como podemos ver en el artículo de Tipos de insectos de ExpertoAnimal. Sin embargo, se pueden diferenciar de otros hexápodos por su cápsula cefálica. Esta es hipognata puesto que se encuentra perpendicular al eje del cuerpo y está adaptada al tipo de alimentación del saltamontes.
