Four nights ago, I saw an insect flying in the hallway; it seemed to be drawn to the light of the lamps or escaping from our cats. I thought it was a dragonfly at first, but it looked a bit plumper.
Hace 4 noches vi un insecto volando en el corredor que parecía buscar la luz de las lámparas o huía de ser caza por nuestras gatas. Pensé que era una libélula, pero se veía más regordeta.
What really caught my attention was how beautiful its flight was.

I wasn't able to photograph it until the following morning when, to my surprise, I found it still resting on a column.

It turned out to be a large moth known as a "sphinx moth," and I don't recall ever seeing one before.
En realidad era una polilla grande de las llamadas "mariposas esfinge" y no recuerdo haber visto una antes.
It was approximately 8 centimeters long, featuring shades of beige, cream, orange, and brown.

Its scientific name is Erinnyis ello, and its habitat extends from North America down through Central and South America.

It is also known as the "cassava hornworm," likely due to its appearance during the larval stage.

There are many fascinating facts about the Sphingidae family, to which it belongs. Many of its members feed on flower nectar using a long proboscis and fly just like hummingbirds.
