Melanargia galathea (Linnaeus, 1758)
Das Schachbrett ist ein Tagfalter aus der Familie der Edelfalter (Nymphalidae). Auch dieser Falter zählt zu den Grasarten, deren Raupen sich von unterschiedlichen Gräsern ernähren. 2019 wurde das Schachbrett zum Schmetterling des Jahres in Deutschland gewählt. Mit dieser Wahl will man jedes Jahr auf die Bedeutung und Bedrohung aufmerksam machen. Viele natürliche Graslandschaften werden zurückgedrängt und fallen dem zügellosen Flächenfraß der Industrie zum Opfer. Düngemittel und Pestizide vernichten weiteren Lebensraum für Insekten und Pflanzen. Korridore, in denen Insekten wandern können, sucht man zunehmend vergebens. Hier geht es nicht mehr um nachhaltigen Ackerbau, sondern nur noch darum, das Maximum an Profit pro m² Fläche zu erzielen. Unsere Nahrungsmittel verkommen immer mehr zu Füllstoffen, die den Namen den sie tragen, nicht wert sind.
Schmetterlinge gehören sicher zu den bekanntesten Insekten und kaum jemand kann sich ihrem bezaubernden Anblick entziehen. Sie gelten als Indikator, um auf den weltweiten Artenschwund aufmerksam zu machen.
The marbled white is a butterfly from the family of Nymphalidae. This butterfly also belongs to the grass species whose caterpillars feed on different grasses. In 2019 the marbled white was selected as Butterfly of the Year in Germany. With this selection every year, one wants to draw attention to the importance and threat. Many natural grasslands are pushed back and fall victim to the rampant exploitation of industry. Fertilizers and pesticides destroy further habitats for insects and plants. Corridors in which insects can migrate are increasingly sought in vain. This is no longer about sustainable agriculture, but only about achieving the maximum profit per m² of area. Our food is degenerating more and more into fillers that are not worth the name they bear.
Butterflies are certainly among the most famous insects and hardly anyone can escape their enchanting sight. They are regarded as an indicator to draw attention to the worldwide loss of species.

Auch dieses Jahr fliegt das Schachbrett wieder zahlreich in Unterfranken. Das soll jedoch nicht darüber hinwegtäuschen, dass der Falter in vielen Teilen Deutschlands nicht mehr vorkommt. Für mich ist es ein großes Privileg, in einer Region zu leben, in der eine gewisse Biodiversität noch gegeben ist.
Also this year the marbled white flies again numerously in Lower Franconia. However, this should not hide the fact that the butterfly no longer occurs in many parts of Germany. For me it is a great privilege to live in a region where a certain biodiversity still exists.

Industrieller Fortschritt funktioniert auch, ohne die Natur zu zerstören. Es reicht nicht aus, eine grüne Fahne zu hissen und mit Floskeln wie Nachhaltigkeit um sich zu werfen. Politik und Industrie müssen kein Geld für die Natur bereitstellen, sondern einfach nur kluge Entscheidungen treffen. Alles andere, regelt der Markt und die Natur schon selber.
_Industrial progress also works without destroying nature. It is not enough to raise a green flag and throw around phrases like sustainability. Politics and industry do not have to provide money for nature, but simply make wise decisions. Everything else is regulated by the market and nature itself.

Flora & Fauna sind ein wesentlicher Teil meines Lebens. Umso mehr ich mich mit Pflanzen und Tieren beschäftige, verstehe ich die Zusammenhänge und kann mir meine ganz persönliche Meinung bilden. Wie schnell die Zeit vergeht und keiner kann sie anhalten. Was zählt, ist der Moment. Ein Tag neigt sich dem Ende. Glücklich und zufrieden verlasse ich meine Wiese. Der Zauber in der Natur, hat mich wieder in seinen Bann gezogen. Augenblicke im Leben, die ich nicht missen möchte. How quickly time passes and nobody can stop it. What counts is the moment. A day comes to an end. Happy and satisfied I leave my meadow. The magic of nature has captivated me again. Moments in life that I wouldn't want to miss. With my pictures I want to make advertisement for nature and everything that it causes.

Its very lovely beautiful butterfly with off white and ash colours, i have never seen this type of butterfly and couldn't find locally. More importantly its selected for the year of Germany and truely their living land which is surrounded with grass is decrease day by day for the use of chemicals and fertilizers. Some beautiful images illustrating a very informative article, thanks for sharing with us. We have the same issue in the UK with farmers and other land owners, using as much as possible, so the wildlife gets pushed out of the area
I believe this is a worldwide problem and is not limited to individual countries. Unfortunately there is usually a lack of will to make wise decisions. Money rules the world!
What an amazing contrast on the wings, butterflies do stand out teasing one with their stunning beauty. Dancing from flower to flower what a wonderful time to be in the meadows enjoying the fresh air with them.
Very sad when one thinks of how many species will go extinct, some through natural evolution, many from man made pollution.
Stunning photography once again.
In the end, we humans decide how we shape our future. With my pictures I want to be an advertising ambassador and hope to open the eyes of one or the other.

Schöner Falter. Schade dass es zunehmend schwieriger wird Insekten zu fotografieren. Mir fällt aber auch bei uns in Österreich auf dass es von Jahr zu Jahr weniger werden. Wenn ich daran denke wie viele Gelsen und Stechmücken wir noch vor einigen Jahren hatten, ohne Fliegengitter könnte ich das Fenster nicht öffnen am Abend. Jetzt schlafe ich manchmal bei offenem Fenster und trotzdem habe ich meistens kein Problem mit den Mücken.
Das erinnert mich an meine Zeit in Wien. Damals habe ich in Großenzersdorf gewohnt. In den Lobauen wurde man im Hochsommer von den Stechmücken förmlich gefressen. Auch bei uns ist die Anzahl der Arten in vielen Bereichen stark rückläufig. Das kann man auch ohne die wissenschaftliche Ermittlung der Biomasse erkennen.
