Rotbraunes Wiesenvögelchen ■ The chestnut heath
Coenonympha glycerion (Borkhausen, 1788)
Das rotbraune Wiesenvögelchen ist wie das kleine Wiesenvögelchen ein Tagfalter aus der Familie der Edelfalter (Nymphalidae). In Unterfranken existiert nur eine Population vom rotbraunen Wiesenvögelchen. Der Falter fliegt in einer Generation von Mitte Juni bis Ende Juli. Die Raupe ernährt sich von unterschiedlichen Gräsern und überwintert. Das kleine Wiesenvögelchen ist allerdings sehr zahlreich in ganz Deutschland verbreitet. Auf meinem nachfolgenden Bild kann man die Unterschiede der beiden Arten sehr gut erkennen. Auf der linken Seite das kleine Wiesenvögelchen und rechts das rotbraune Wiesenvögelchen. Mein Freund Ritschi hatte die beiden bei ihrem Sonnenbad entdeckt.
Like the chestnut heath, the small heath (Coenonympha pamphilus) is a butterfly of the family of Nymphalidae. In Lower Franconia only one population of the chestnut heath exists. The butterfly flies in one generation from mid-June to the end of July. The caterpillar feeds on different grasses and hibernates. However, the small heath is very abundant throughout Germany. On my following picture you can see the differences between the two species very well. On the left side the small heath and on the right side the chestnut heath. My friend Ritschi had discovered them while sunbathing.

Wir waren bewusst am Abend in diesem Gebiet unterwegs. Mit der tief stehenden Sonne war das Licht großartig und die Schmetterlinge waren nicht mehr so aktiv. Wir konnten beide ganz komfortabel mit Stativ fotografieren. Motive gab es an diesem Abend zahlreich, sodass wie beide äußerst zufrieden mit unseren Bildern waren.
We were deliberately on the road in this area in the evening. With the low sun the light was great and the butterflies were not so active anymore. We were both able to take pictures comfortably with tripods. There were numerous motives in this evening, so that we were both very satisfied with our pictures.

Bei der Motivauswahl hatten wir die Qual der Wahl. Es blieb sogar genügend Zeit, dass wir uns gegenseitig in Aktion fotografierten. Das Spiel mit dem Licht hat uns beiden richtig Spaß bereitet. Die nachfolgende Aufnahme zeigt Ritschi wie er ein Wiesenvögelchen im Gegenlicht fotografiert.
We were spoilt for choice when choosing the motif. There was even enough time for us to photograph each other in action. The play with the light was really fun for both of us. The following picture shows Ritschi taking a picture of a chestnut heath against the light.

Natürlich habe auch ich die Gelegenheit genutzt und den Falter mit der Sonne im Hintergrund fotografiert. Er hatte sich eine Kugeldistel als Ansitz für die Nacht ausgesucht. Längst war er im Schlafmodus und nicht mehr gewillt davon zu fliegen.
Of course I also took the opportunity to photograph the butterfly with the sun in the background. He had chosen a globe thistle as his seat for the night. He had long since gone into sleep mode and was no longer willing to fly away.

Natürlich habe ich den Falter auch von der gegenüber liegenden Seite fotografiert. Wenn ich mir den Vergleich zu meiner Gegenlichtaufnahme betrachte, empfinde ich das vorherige Bild als wesentlich stimmungsvoller. Die Farben sind wärmer und schmeichel meinem Auge mehr. Wie seht Ihr den Vergleich der beiden Aufnahmen und welches Bild gefällt euch am besten?
Of course I also photographed the butterfly from the opposite side. When I look at the comparison to my backlight shot, I find the previous picture to be much more atmospheric. The colours are warmer and flatter my eye more. How do you see the comparison of the two pictures and which picture do you like best?

Sehr gerne wechsle ich von meinem Makro- auf mein Weitwinkelobjektiv. Ich kann damit mein Motiv im Habitat zeigen, was für mich immer besonders reizvoll ist. Mit der untergehenden Sonne im Hintergrund neigt sich unsere Tour dem Ende. Die Abendstunden verstrichen im Flug und es blieben freudige Gedanken an ein besonderes Habitat. Einem Habitat, in dem das letzte Vorkommen vom rotbraunen Wiesenvögelchen noch lebt.
I very much like to change from my macro to my wide angle lens. With it I can show my motive in the habitat, which is always particularly attractive for me. With the setting sun in the background our tour comes to an end. The evening hours passed by in flight and joyful thoughts about a special habitat remained. A habitat where the last occurrence of the chestnut heath still lives.

Warum sich der Falter ausgerechnet diese Wiese ausgesucht hat, bleibt für uns ein Rätzel. Genau das macht die Erkundung der Natur auch interessant. Die Neugierde treibt uns immer wieder voran um die Geheimnisse der Natur zu zu erkunden.
Why the butterfly chose this particular meadow remains a mystery to us. This is exactly what makes the exploration of nature interesting. Curiosity drives us again and again to explore the secrets of nature.

Die Ursache für den Auswahl der Wiese als Ausbreitungsgebiet dürfte in dem Umstand begründet liegen, dass dort die Sonne bis zum Sonnenuntergang noch Wärme und damit Energie spendet ohne die eigenen Energiereserven mehr als über Gebühr angreifen zu müssen.
Nur eine Vermutung.
Schöner Beitrag - und wie immer mit tollen Fotos.

Von solchen Wiesen gibt es bei uns noch einige. Warum der Falter nur in dieser Ecke vorkommt bleibt ein Rätzel. Klasse ist, dass ich ihn so zahlreich nachweisen konnte. Die Population scheint stabil zu sein.

A fantastic selection of images. I particulary love the first one which is a useful comparison shot of the two species and the 2nd one with the butterfly backlit on the seed/flower head. Great stuff, thanks for sharing!

Finde Deine Aufnahmen immer wieder toll und natürlich finde ich es absolut Klasse, dass Du die Tiere nur fotografierst und sie nicht tötest um in einer Sammlung zu verstauben.
