GIANT SILK MOTH ...post follow-up

Giant Silk Moth female emerged from her Chrysalis outside my kitchen window..

Info from wikipedia ... was right on...

To mate, the female sends out pheromones which the male can detect up to a mile away. Mating usually begins in the morning and last into the evening.

Male came later the same day she emerged and mating went on all day, even through a windy rain storm that evening.

You can see the chrysalis (cocoon) to the right of the moths. There are two moths there but I couldn't get a clear shot due to their positioning.

The ends of their abdomens were locked together throughout. Next morning they were gone...

These largest North American moths with a wing span of 6 inches and longer are born without a mouth or digestive organs. They live for 2 weeks, with sole purpose of mating and laying eggs.

Two in a sexual marathon with the female then laying up to 100 eggs on either side of a host leaf...

The emerged larvae feast on the trees leaves, (maple, birch & apple) as they go through 5 stages ... In the mature stage the larvae spins a brown cocoon (chrysalis) in Autumn...
