The beginning of this week feels like we might be turning a corner where we finally see more games being played than are getting postponed. I read a really good article in the middle of the week where they were discussing whether or not teams should be trying to make up those postponed games.
The argument was that these athletes are already strectec pretty thin. Why try to squeeze more games in when last year there were teams that played half as many games as some other teams and still made it to the tournament. I think it is a fair question and the reasoning has some merit.
If I were on a team that was getting ready to head into the conference and national tournament, I wouldn't want to have to quickly squeeze in three or four games in a weeks time. That would just be dumb.
Feel free to play devil's advocate on that argument in the comments.
Monday we had zero top 25 teams playing while Tuesday brought us 10 games and only two of those ten were postponed.
One was the Purdue/Michigan game, so it seems U of M is still in Covid protocol.
The other was Providence at Creighton.
Tuesday did give us a couple of upsets with unranked Stanford beating #5 USC by six points. Additionally, #19 Texas Tech took down #1 Baylor by three points. Time for a new number 1... It is probably too early to tell with a weekend of basketball ahead of us, but who do you think will move into that #1 spot?
Wednesday there were no upsets, but there almost was when unranked Minnesota came to the Breslin Center to play #10 Michigan State.
I watched the game and Michigan State played really well in the first half. Minnesota really turned things around in the second half and made a game of it for sure. Thankfully, State walked away with a two point victory, but it sure wasn't pretty. I kind of feel like they are at the point where they need to get that one really embarassing loss behind them and then they can move forward from there.
I just hope that loss isn't against Michigan.
Thursday night gave us seven games in the top 25.
Two of them just happened to be upsets. Unranked DePaul took down #20 Seton Hall, and unranked Oregon beat #3 UCLA. That's two top 5 teams that got beat by unranked teams and we aren't even to the weekend yet. You might want to think again if you were going to say UCLA was going to be the new #1.
Barring a loss this weekend, it is probably pretty certain that Gonzaga is going to move back into the #1 spot. Especially after the 110 to 84 beating they put down on BYU.
I guess we will just have to wait and see.
The good news is, I get to go down to Ohio and watch my neices play in person this weekend, so I am really excited about that. I can't wait to come back and tell you how they did. Stay tuned for that post on Monday or Tuesday of next week!
Let's see if the rematch at Marriot Center will have BYU beat Gonzaga then.
